Woot - Now on the Weight Front

Today is the beginning of week 5 on the Keto diet. It is getting easier bit by bit and I see now that Dr. Fung recommends taking a day every month or two months to eat carbs to throw your body off a bit. I am not there yet and while yesterday I thought I would do that soon now I have no desire to.

The better news is:

1) Morning blood sugars are usually the highest of the day for Type 2 diabetics, This morning mine was 4.8 (approx. 85 on the U.S scale) which is very close to what a non-diabetics should be. My blood sugars have fallen all across the board.

2) I lost 2.8 pounds last week. and a total of 12.5 pounds in 4 weeks now. I am just 4 pounds away from where I was when I got busy after my initial diagnosis and lost 30 pounds (only to gain it back). 

3) My weight according to the charts should be 160. I would never make it and I do not want to be that small. My 'sorta' goal is 170 and I have a shot at that. My real goal is to get down to 180 which is my low point over the the last decade. I am only 27 pounds away from that and that is really doable now.

4) Their is very good anecdotal evidence backed up by at least one study that says drinking 2 tablespoons of apple cider vinegar at bedtime lowers morning glucose levels. I started last night which led to the drop from 5.4 (approx 99) to 4.8 (approx 85). I will continue this for a week and see what happens. But, whether it contributes to lower glucose or not it is a good find. On a high fat diet the taste of vinegar is great and worth it just for the satisfaction value.

5) I have finished Dr. Jason Fung's book The Obesity Code and now know more than I ever knew before about weight gain and diabetes. In fact, according to both my brother-in-law ( an OB-GYN and Reproductive Endocrinologist) and a friend who is a specialist in metabolic diseases I now know more than most doctors who haven't kept up with modern research. I know I know more than the people at the diabetes clinic who 'educated' me after my diagnosis in a three day course in which, I now know, nearly everything they taught me is wrong.

I will have to pass on that tidbit about the 2 tbsps of apple cider vinegar on to the diabetics at work and tell them the benefits of taking it.  I'd always heard that its good for a number of things, but to lower blood sugar, I hadn't.  When I had mine checked for insurance reasons, it was 90, US standards. To have yours as low as 85, is awesome.  Congrats on your continued weight loss Ken.  You're doing fantastic!  {#apploud.gif}

Eating as much fat as I do this dioet I have to say that vinegar tastes good also.

Yep, I have heard of the Apple Cider Vinegar lowing blood sugar. I have tried this but I never stick to it for to long.

Please be sure to mix your vinegar in water.

cinnamon works good also and it helps lower cholesterol, lower the ldl and raise the hdl

Good for you Ken.  Lately, I've been at a "standstill."  I'm not gaining weight, but I haven't lost any either lately.  Then, too, with all the snow and ice on the ground, I haven't been able to get out for walks either.  It'll be different when it warms up.

This diet is working very well for me. Now ehen I start throwing exercise in ... whoo hooo.

Ken what kind of meals are you eating though>? I have seen the keto pizza recipe. Can you give me some ideas?

It is hard to ezplain meals to you as I am not a very good cook. I have just replaced carbs with fat. I get 70 - 75 percent of my calories from fat: animal, coconut oil, butter, nuts. I get 20 - 25 % from protein and 5 - 10% from carbs making sure to eat under 30 grams of carbs a day.

You would be best to get a book about Keto dieting to understand it and join a few Keto facebook groups. Or maybe you have people local to you who can guide you.

I only weight myself once a week otherwise it would be discouraging.

Apple Cider Vinegar is meant to help a number of things I've read. I tried it once and couldn't get down one whole bottle.

Funny I did see it for sale at Dollar Tree, for a buck you can't go wrong if someone wanted to try it.

It's a crying shame that the diabetic clinic isn't on top of the latest research.  But good for you for taking matters into your own hands!

Most doctors are notup on this.

I just exercised 3 miles and am drinking the vinegar. You got me inspired Ken. lol

Wendi, I screwed up today and forgot my morning Metformin. Ate breakfast, lunch nd had an afternoon Keto snack before I remembered I had forgotten and then checked my blood sugar. My glocose was only 5.8 (104). Guess I am doing pretty good on this diet.

You are doing better than me. Mine was running high today for some reason. I need to get this under control.

Good for you, it just sounds so funny talking about a diet that you just eat Fat.....lol
