The Ungovernable Force...
...Expect Resistance
About Me
As Joseph Conrad once said, I aspire to;
"by the power of the written word to make you hear, to make you feel... before all, to make you see . That — and no more, and it is everything. If I succeed, you shall find there according to your deserts: encouragement, consolation, fear, charm — all you demand — and, perhaps, also that glimpse of truth for which you have forgotten to ask."
I am a photographer based in London studying Photojournalism at degree level at the London College of Communication. It is a course which alows me to follow my twin passions of writing and photography. I shirk any attempt to be pigeon holed politically or philosophically and am only concerned with winning equality for all but believe that this will not be achieved by wishing it, action must follow words.
I began using a camera regularly at the age of 16, although I was familiar with cameras from an earlier age due to parents who were passionate about manual photography. My first camera was a 30 year old Zenit, still stamp marked; 'Made in the U.S.S.R'.
After learning the craft on manual film cameras, I embraced the digital revolution with a Canon 350D, which was promptly stolen from me during my first sojourn to Asia mere weeks after I got it.
I upgraded to the Canon 400D which I took with me on two trips to India totaling seven months, on which I took what I consider to be my strongest work. I photographed children living in the slum areas in and around Mumbai for a small NGO called Aangan (Shelter), which were used as educational material within the country and wrote an article about the experience.
Between trips I spent several years covering social issues, often culminating in marches and protests, in London and around the country, focusing heavily on the Animal Rights movement to which I have a strong personal attachemnt.
Since returning from Asia and begining my degree, I upgraded again to the Canon 5D MKII which is a simply brilliant camera and I have photographed various newsworthy events in London but also abroad. I photographed the COP15 climate conference in Copenhagen where I stayed with the anti-Globilisation activists and documented their various attempts to highlight their cause.
I aspire to document social movements around the world, and if possible, advance them, not only through my photography and writing, but by working with them. I picked up a camera and a pen with the aim of making the World a better place, but if I ever believe that in casting them aside I would become closer to that lofty goal, I would do so in an instant.
I began this blog originally to document my travels around Central America, since returning to the UK, rather than ignoring my blog I have decided to post my articles here instead.
