The Only 9/11 Conspiracy

Added: Thursday, February 21st 2008 at 11:34am by robertflynn

The only 9/11 conspiracy I know is the conspiracy to convince the world that there were no warnings before 9/11, that the warnings were about an attack outside the US, and that no one ever imagined using airliners as bombs.

1994 Three separate attacks involved hijacking airplanes to crash them into buildings. (New York Times 10/3/01)

January 1996  US intelligence received information concerning a planned suicide attack on the White House with a plane flown from Afghanistan. (Senate Intelligence Committee 9/18/02)

July-August, 1996 US officials identified crop-dusters as potential terrorist weapons that could threaten the Olympic Games in Atlanta. Helicopters and jets were deployed. Law enforcement agents watched regional airports so that no one stole an airplane to attack the games. (Chicago Tribune 11/18/01)

October 1996 US intelligence learned of an Iranian plot to hijack a Japanese airplane over Israel and crash it into Tel Aviv. (Senate Intelligence Committee 9/18/02)

February 1997 “Federal bureaucracy and airline lobbying slowed and weakened a set of safety improvements recommended by a presidential commission-including one that an airline industry official later said might have prevented the Sept. 11 terror attacks.” (Los Angeles Times 10/6/01)

June 8, 1998  A US grand jury indicted bin Laden of conspiracy to attack the US. (PBS Frontline 10/3/02)

August 1998 A CIA intelligence report stated that Arab terrorists planned to fly a bomb-laden aircraft from a foreign country into the World Trade Center. (Senate Intelligence Committee 9/18/02)

Autumn 1998 US intelligence learned of a bin Laden plot involving aircraft in the New York and Washington areas. (Senate Intelligence Committee 9/18/02)

October 8, 1998 The FAA issued a warning to the nation's airports and airlines urging a “high degree of vigilance” because of threats to US civil aviation by al-Qaida, including a possible terrorist hijacking “at a metropolitan airport in the Eastern United States.” (Boston Globe 5/26/02) April 18, 2001 The FAA warned that Middle Eastern terrorists could hijack or blow up a US jetliner. (AP 5/18/02) July 31, 2001 The FAA issued a third warning that “terror groups are known to be planning and training for hijackings.” The alerts had expired by 9/11. Flight crews later claimed they received no such warnings. The text of the warnings remains classified. (CNN 3/02)

November 1998 US intelligence learned that a Turkish extremist group planned to crash an airplane packed with explosives into a Turkish government ceremony. (Senate Intelligence Committee 9/18/02)

1999 British intelligence agency, M16, told the US embassy staff in London that al-Qaida planned to use “commercial aircraft” in “unconventional ways,” “possibly as flying bombs.” (Sunday Times 6/9/02)

Spring 1999 US intelligence learned of a planned bin Laden attack on a US government facility in Washington. (Senate Intelligence Committee)

June 7, 1999 Bin Laden was placed on the FBI's “10 Most Wanted List.”

(Congressional Inquiry 7/24/03)

September 1999 A report by the National Intelligence Council stated: “Suicide bomber(s) belonging to al-Qaida's Martyrdom Battalion could crash-land an aircraft packed with high explosives into the Pentagon, the headquarters of the Central Intelligence Agency (CIA), or the White House. (AP 4/18/02)

1999 US intelligence learned of a bin Laden plot to hijack a 747. (Senate Intelligence Committee 9/18/02)

1999 German intelligence warned the CIA, Britain's MI6, and Israel's Mossad that Middle Eastern terrorists planned to hijack commercial aircraft to use as weapons to attack “American and Israeli symbols.” (Washington Post 9/14/01)

June 26, 2001 An Indian magazine reported more details of the cooperative efforts of the US, India, Russia, Tajikistan, Uzbekistan and Iran against the Taliban regime: India and Iran would “facilitate” US and Russian plans for “limited military action” against the Taliban if new economic sanctions didn't change Afghanistan's fundamentalist regime. (India Reacts 6/26/01)

June 28, 2001 CIA Director Tenet wrote an intelligence summary for National Security Adviser Rice: “It is highly likely that a significant al-Qaida attack is in the near future, within several weeks.”

July 20-22, 2001 US intelligence reported a spike in warnings regarding the G-8 summit in Genoa, including a threat to crash an airplane into the meeting.  (BBC 7/18/01) Rather than staying overnight at the US Embassy as planned, Bush had himself flown to a US aircraft carrier. (CNN 7/18/01) Italy surrounded the summit with antiaircraft weapons, kept jet fighters in the air, and closed off local airspace to all planes. (Los Angeles Times 9/27/01)

Late July 2001 Taliban Foreign Minister Wakil Muttawakil learned of an imminent attack on targets inside America and sent an emissary to warn the US consul general. Intelligence complained of “information fatigue.” (Reuters 9/7/02)

August 13-15 2001 After one day of training Zacarias Moussaoui looked so suspicious that instructors warned the FBI that he was a terrorist. (Senate Intelligence Committee, 10/17/02) A flight instructor warned “A 747 fully loaded with fuel could be used as a weapon.” (New York Times 2/8/02)

Summer 2001 Egyptian intelligence in Cairo warned the CIA that 20 al-Qaida members had slipped into the US and four of them had received flight training. (CBS 10/9/02) This was one of several Egyptian warnings.

Summer 2001 FAA officials tried to dispense with “primary” radars.  If an airplane turned off its transponder, no radar could see it. NORAD rejected the proposal. (Aviation Week and Space Technology 6/3/02)

Summer  2001, veteran counterterrorism officers “were so worried about an impending disaster that one of them told us that they considered resigning and going public with their concerns,” according to a staff report issued by the (9/11) commission. Senior CIA officials were frustrated by some Bush appointees who questioned their veracity. (Washington Post 3/24/04)

Late summer 2001 Jordanian intelligence intercepted a message that a major attack, code named “The Big Wedding,” was planned inside the US and that aircraft would be used. Saudi King Abdullah relayed the message to Washington.  (Christian Science Monitor 5/23/02) Later Prince Bandar, sometimes called Bandar Bush because of his closeness to the Bush family, said Saudi intelligence followed the plotters “with precision” and that “If U.S. security authorities had engaged their Saudi counterparts in a serious and credible manner, in my opinion, we would have avoided what happened.” (CNN 11/07) How credible was Saudi intelligence? In 2006 Bandar threatened to withhold intelligence if Britain did not stop investigation of bribes paid to Saudi royalty by arms company BAE. Tony Blair stopped the investigation. (Guardian 2/15/06)

August 2001 Russian President Putin warned the US that suicide pilots were training for attacks on US targets. (Fox News 5/17/02)

Britain gave the US another warning about an al-Qaida attack, specifically multiple airplane hijackings. This warning was included in Bush's briefing on August 6. (Sunday Herald 5/19/02)

August 2001 The CIA warned the White House, Pentagon and State Department that bin Laden was intent on an imminent attack, possibly inside the US. (Sunday Herald 9/23/01) Britain warned of an al-Qaida attack, specifying multiple airplane hijackings. It was included in Bush's August 6 briefing (Sunday Herald 5/19/02) August 2001 US intelligence learned of a plot to either bomb the US embassy in Nairobi or crash an airplane into it. (Senate Intelligence Committee 9/18/02)

August 24, 2001 The CIA requested information about Moussaoui calling him a “suspect airline suicide hijacker.” (Senate Intelligence Committee 10/17/02)

9/10  Bush spent the night at Colony Beach and Tennis Resort on Longboat Key, Florida. Surface-to-air missiles were placed on the roof of the resort. (Sarasota Herald-Tribune, 9/10/02)

9/11 Booker Elementary principal Gwen Tose-Rigell was summoned to a room to talk to George Bush. “He said a commercial plane has hit the World Trade Center, and we're going to go ahead and go on, we're going on to do the reading thing anyway.” (AP 8/19/02)

9/11 Bush was in a classroom when chief of staff, Andrew Card told him, “America's under attack.” (New York Times, 9/16/01) A reporter standing nearby said, “From the demeanor of the President, grinning at the children, it appeared that the enormity of what he had been told was taking a while to sink in.” (Daily Mail 9/8/02)

Intelligence expert James Bamford described Bush's reaction. “Immediately an expression of befuddlement passed across the president's face. Then, having just been told that the country was under attack, the commander-in-chief appeared uninterested in further details. He never asked if there had been any additional threats, where the attacks were coming from, how to best protect the country from further attacks. Instead, in the middle of a modern-day Pearl Harbor, he simply turned back to the matter at hand: the day's photo op.” (Body of Secrets, James Bamford) “For some reason, Secret Service agents did not bustle him away.” (Globe and Mail 9/12/01)

Bush later said: “And I was sitting outside the classroom waiting to go in, and I saw an airplane hit the tower-the TV was obviously on, and I use to fly myself- and I said, ‘There's one terrible pilot.’ And I said, ‘It must have been a horrible accident.’” (CNN 12/4/01) He repeated the story on other occasions. (White House 1/5/02; CBS 9/11/02)

Bush also echoed Condi Rice, “Never (in) anybody's thought processes...about how to protect America did we ever think that the evil doers would fly not one but four commercial aircraft into precious US targets...never.” (NATO 9/16/01)

April 13, 2004 At a Prime Time Press Conference Bush again claimed that “there was nobody in our government, at least, and I don't think the prior government that could envision flying airplanes into buildings.” Days earlier the Wall Street Journal had reported that under Clinton, “the federal government had on several earlier occasions taken elaborate, secret measures to protect special events from just such an attack.” (Wall Street Journal 4/1/04)

Is it possible that George Bush, the officials with him at the school, officials in the White House and Pentagon did not know that there were warnings that terrorists might fly hijacked airliners into US targets? How is it possible that no one put the military, FAA, the airlines, NORAD, first responders on alert?  Is it possible that no one saw the hijacking of four airliners as the threatened attack or that an airliner hitting the WTC on a clear day was an accident?

9/11 was a precursor of Afghanistan, Iraq,  Katrina, Rita, increased terrorism, weakened military, enormous debt and other debacles.  Warnings that the levees could be breached, official reports that the levees had been breached, apathy on the part of the Bush administration, then lies that there were no warnings and that no one imagined such a thing happening, followed by ineptitude and gross incompetence.

The way to thwart conspiracy theories is to provide as much information possible as quickly as possible but the White House, the administration and Republican controlled congress stonewalled the release of such information. Before 9/11 the only threat to national security that concerned Republicans was Monica Lewinsky. After 9/11 they showed no interest in investigating the failure to prepare for or defend from an imminent attack. Instead, they wanted to strike back and the first strike was against the Bill of Rights.

Who were the patriots who left the country unprotected by feckless leadership? Co-conspirators who aided and abetted the conspiracy of lies will be the subject of the next post.

Special gratitude must be paid by this writer and others who have investigated 9/11 to Paul Thompson for his laborious and meticulous compilation Project: Complete 911 Timeline.
