Art Sunday: Colorists
There are colorist and there are Colorists. These are artists who puts the color, lights, moods and shadows to every comic page you ever read. It goes something like this:

Yes, they transform something like that on the left and paint over it to become like, something on the right. I was fortunate enough to be able to work with one 13 years ago.
Around that time I set up a company that does online graphic novels. I was fortunate enough to be able to work with an artist whose works I will feature today. An artist who taught me what he could [to be featured another time]. We'd train other artists and that's where I got to learn more about the craft - teaching. I guess if you want to learn more about anything, you have to teach it.
The artist's name is Rainier Berredo. Each panel that leaves his computer becomes an artwork. After working with me he ended up doing gigs for Marvel. He still works for them 13 years later. I have no idea how much each work cost but after more than a decade, he has become a master in his own right.
He himself is nothing short of wonderful too. There was a time when I needed help. I needed to be taught how to color a simple avatar for a project. He came all the way from his place in Batangas and sat down with me. He taught me how to color, the way he does it, the techniques, what to look out for and a few shortcuts.

Rain is also gay and proud of it. One of the things I miss being around him is the latest hair products and trying out skin treatments. He also loves a good laugh.
Not all of his works look like "comics". There are times when he feels the need to be really artistic and tries to do something out of the box.

For this last picture, I can't help but think of him. I wish him the best wherever he is right now.
Always!

one of my favorite artists was Jack "King" Kirby he said once that without a good colorist his work looked flat.. I tend to agree. a good colorist is very important. Love these pics Rica! |
thanks rantshack and yes.... they would look flat. However I do like a good black and white sometimes. :) I'll feature that next week. |
like lighting in a movie ~ it creates the whole atmosphere of the work his use of color and shading captures and moves the eye fascinating :) |
i have you added to the art sunday tour: http://www.blogster.com/nemo4sun/the-art-sunday-tour#comment-1bomk :) |
Totally amazing and how cool that you were taught how to colour graphic novels. My brother in law owned a comic shop for awhile and got me into comics. Your friend Ranier has amazing talent! :-) |
Wow. When I win Lottery I'm gonna buy me a panel van and have one of this guy's works airbrushed on each side! (OK, wishes are free) Great pieces though! |
You are so fortunate to have known and learned from such a great artist. He truly brings life into the drawings! |
Transforming a drawing and paint over it to become like you shown. Interesting work. I always love to look at art and the artist's works. Thank you for the show |
