Diary of a Pack Rat

I've unpacked most of my boxes now, and my apartment is starting to look like a curiosity shoppe run by a hoarder..
I think I should stop now while Im ahead!
I dont ever think Im excessive, yes  I do like new classy colourful stuff, but I never think Im going overboard at the time of purchase, but when I bring it home I usually have to put something away..or move things around incessantly until the New Thing fits..on the shelft, mantle..closet! I'm a memory hoarder, I busy things as I travel (and..sigh..Ive travelled a lot..) and then cant bear to get rid of anything in case it destroys the memory, which of course it doesnt but try tell my brain that!!
Then try moving from a large house to a two bedroomed (quite roomy I thought) apartment, and my problem has literally become the elephant in the room...
Anyhow let me get back to it all before a neighbour calls Hoarders Anon.

Hmm could someone find my dogs?

(laughs..I posted this under'organize and clean'...)

My husband is a terrible pack rat. He collects every conceivable piece of old junk and after filling a 2,000 square foot cellar is now building a 2 story barn. When he dies I'm having the yard sale from Hell....

bwahhhhahaa...please dont tell me where or when because i know I'll take at least half!!

In that case...you're getting the first invite.

safe me the time..just ship it..

:))

Is your driveway large enough to accommodate a tractor trailer truck?

sobs..yes it is...

**Rubs hands together in anticipation of clearing out the cellar**

chuckles mirthlessly

Is it alright if I leave the mold and cobwebs on...?

oh why not..its Halloween after all

lol

Run the can opener, dogs will come running ---- or that works for cats.

When Russ and I got married 8 years ago I was living in a 3300 sq. ft. 3 level house, large shop and some land (had lived in that house 30 years).  He had a camper for staying in during the week as he was trucking and a ranch in New Mexico and a nice sized house, etc on a place where he was raised and raised his family.  We had lots of decisions.  Moving to this place with a much smaller house than either of us had.  What to keep, what to sell/give away and what to trash -- and hoping the kids helped out by taking their fair shares.

Then in late summer of 2012 while on vacation our house flooded from the ice maker hose.  Some things were lost.  Most of the house moved into storage pods, the garage or the storage barn. Some very important papers were accidently lost (I really think Russ did a clean house on the storage barn without looking at items).

I hope to never move again. It's too stressful and too much work.

a move is so stressful on so many levels...and I know this wont be my last move!!

A house into two rooms?! That's going to require a magician to get it all in, I would think. I'm not very good about getting rid of things either, especially books. I can't bear the thought of throwing away a single book even if I haven't so much as looked at anything but the binding on the shelf for more than two or thee decades. When I moved from Boston to NJ, more than half the weight of the moving van was due to books.

i whittled it down as i was packing..and again as I unpack...

I hear you re books, truly a BIG reason for buying a kindle!!

The sad thing is I have a Kindle, well, Kindle for the PC. And not everything is not available in eformat.

it soon will be though..:)) I know..my weakness is decorating magazines..wth??? I have a small fortune's worth...

oh my what happened to the SC chairs???

I have them here :)) havent restored them yet..will do it soon and post a before and after pic! My problem is that I have no idea what colour to cover the seats...

Try packing ten years and a three bedroom two bath house into one room...

a very difficult thing to do, very!! There is so much emotion attached to our things..I open a box and find a pile of photos and end up on my knees going through everyone...

I have gone from large to small and back to large and now back to small again.....I feel your pain.

sigh...but I guess it just has to be done!

I can't imagine moving what I have accumulated now... I've lived in this apartment now for 10 years... I've never lived anywhere that long. I dread moving, in fact.

Im sure...jeesh...

(may the force be with you)

Well at least we got a photo here! ;-)

I did make my bed..promise...

Oh, I like a messy bed, it's a sign that someone's been in there! ;-)

Yep, the junk we collect in our passage though life is astounding. I've moved very many times indeed, a kind of rolling stone, and I'm fed up of junk, so I get rid of a lot when I move and then proceed to accumulate more. As you say its also stressful. So now my objective is to move with just a large back pack of stuff. A few CD, A few books, some clothes and a laptop. with a plug in cigarette pack 1 terabyte hard disk. Then I can go walk about – Tahiti, Nepal, Hong Kong, wherever. I'm down to a carload, perhaps next autumn for the walkabout?

damn..I wish i could do that!!

Tee heee, its all a question of attitude towards objects, my dear. Like food, they are expensive to rent. There are very few things you keep all your life anway. PS. I won't mention what I first thought your giraffe was, LOL.

i know..it looks a little..ermm..suggestive doesnt it...LOL

well no one will know whether it is or it isnt...coz Im not telling!!

AHAHAHAHAHAHA, well as long as it tickles your fancy, who cares, roflsssss

blushes..just a little

{#apprehensive.gif}

i feel your pain

:)

nice to know Im not suffering alone!! LOL

i understand what you mean about "destroying the memory"

but certain objects do bring the memory to mind

:)

i knowww..and thats my problem...Im having to be ruthless, no easy way out...before my luggage becomes baggage...

it is hard

the other day grandson used a "fancy" glass to have his tea

and left it sitting on the edge of the sink ~ were of course it fell and broke

well it was from a paddle wheel boat ride we took years ago

it held memories of me and my dad hanging out on the upper deck

talking and watching the world go by

he pasted away years ago

the glass breaking was like losing a bit of my dad

:(

i hear you..and many will ask and maybe you asked yourself that, why did you allow him to drink from the glass, but I say why not..? Its a part of life isnt it....nothing lasts forever and at least he got good use from it :)

And now needs a new glass perhaps..one of his own, with a new memory attached...

well ~ i remember being a kid and what fun it was to use a "fancy" glass

he is the same

he is 10 and will put up a fuss about giving some of his stuff away ~ from his youth

lol

:)

grins...:))

your doggies look like they've already settled in, relaxing in their new home.  It takes time but you'll get there.

i found my new bed linen in a box yesterday eve...so at midnight there I was changing linen...LOL..but it looks great...
