Prednisone Withdrawal Caused Aggression

Skittles surely got up on the wrong side of the bed-or perhaps in a fur kids' life-on the wrong side of the fence this morning.

I feed all the fur kids in different areas of the house. They all eat out of each others bowls and have never had a problem except the first day Skittles could open her mouth to eat. I am sure this was due to hunger after not being able to eat for 2 days.

Well, this morning she was growling every time one of the other fur kids even walked by her dish. That was bad enough but then she started growling at Amber who was sleeping on the floor. The deep, fur raised, head lowered growl that makes people back away from an animal.

Not this people! I had to go somewhere and I picked her up and took her to the vets to be kept there until I was finished and could pick her up. I returned to get her and was told she was in a really foul mood. OOOOH ok....

Bringing her home I kept a leash on her for a while inside so that if she went after one of the fur kids I could stop her fast. She finally settled down and I took the leash off.

I got everyone a snack and she ignored hers. Fancy walked away from hers and Skittles stole it. Ate it too! Fancy took Skittles' snack...and guarded it.

Little Boy had taken his into his cuddle box and he hid it...he never eats them. Soon he got out of his box and went to sleep in another bed. Skittles went and stole the snack out of the box. This one she ate.

Fancy got up on my lap with her snack and ate part of it. Then she got down and had the rest of the snack in front of her. Skittles stole it. I picked up Skittles and proceeded to open her mouth and remove the snack, telling her that it was not hers and Fancy had not left it. First time I have ever done something like that with her. She did not growl or snap at me.

I returned it to Fancy and Fancy smelled it, tasted it and walked away. I put Skittles down by it and told her she could have it since Fancy did not want it.

Skittles has behaved the rest of the day so I hope she is over the worst of the withdrawl from the Predisone....

I hope Skittles understood enough of what I said to pick up the point....

WOW...as long as she doesn't snap or bite you, i guess it is ok. But could it be a side effect of the meds?

It is. I talked to the vet when I picked up Skittles and she said it could last a few days. Prednisone is a steroid and the side effects are not good. That is why I wanted her off them as soon as possible. I am hoping she never has another flare up so she never has to have them again.

I think as long as I don't cause her any pain she will not bite me. She seems to really trust me. If she does bite she will get muzzled until I can trust her.

Prednisone can be tough on humans so I can imagine the effects on a small dog.  I hope Skittles is cheerier today as she gets more of the medicine out of her system.  You're very good with animals, Nota.  Skittles knows she can trust you and who's "alpha Mom"! I'm glad she didn't bite you and I hope she doesn't challenge your authority today either.  Nota, the "dog whisperer"! : )

She is doing much better today. No aggression but she is temporarily not hearing me either. Stay is not in her vocabulary today...LOL!

lol...well, you could say that it causes temporary deafness. hahahahah

LOL!...or being a brat!

Yikes....Mr.SO is on prednisone to reduce swelling, getting ready for nasal surgery.....I sure hope he doesn't react like this......I'll muzzle him!!!!{#basic-wink.gif}

He should do fine on the prednisone. He is young and it does not seem to affect younger people as much. Some of the oldsters I have taken care of have behaved strangely on it-but they as a rule were not all with it to begin with.

Awwwwww...poor skittles, she probably couldn't help it.   Yes, prednisone can have some pretty nasty side effects.  Hope she's doing better today.

She is behaving better today. She is not being aggressive but is not hearing my telling her no either-at least not right away...I was getting ready to open the door and told her to stay. Out she ran to the back yard, did a quick U turn and ran back inside..all I could do was tell her what a good girl she was for coming inside....LOL!

LOL!

She is so well trained...LOL!
