Whoa! The Nativity Myth

Added: Saturday, December 6th 2008 at 8:17pm by mmmhollywould

Some people ask the hardest questions, like, “What do you think of the Atheist sign next to a nativity scene in Washington State?”  Thanks joerff!

Well you know what I think?  I think that is just fine, though the problem is there is no simple explanation for that or just one simple reason.

It falls under the same reason I get disgusted when I hear Christian people claim men and women have different amounts of ribs or that Mary Magdalene was a prostitute or that Jesus was blond haired and blue eyed the reason being is they are too ignorant to know they are spreading outright lies, legends or mythology.  Mary was not a whore and we have the same amount of ribs, Jesus was defiantly not remotely blond or blue eyed (in fact he was mid-eastern go figure) and while your Nativity might be pretty it is also a legend.

Picture it beautiful stable covered in snow, three wise men surrounding the swaddled baby, the star shining down in the sky, Asses and oxen, adoring shepherds, come on now folks.

First and foremost Jesus Christ was not born on December 25th.  It was a pagan holiday and not Yule either but more likely Sol Invictus that was merged with Christianity by Constantine the great.

You see back in the Day, as I learned it in University; we had Constantine who was a member of the pagan faith of the Romans. Now many people will say he was the first Christian roman emperor and they would be correct, sort of because he did not start out that way.   Instead he and claimed to have a vision when going to war with Italy telling him that under the cross he would conquer. There was not only this reason but also he had many family and friends who were part of the cult of Christ, as it was a cult at the time, and he did not want to see them persecuted so when he returned he not only deemed Christianity an official religion but also merged the pagan festival celebrated on December 25th with Christmas but also declared Sunday the day of rest forChristians in the Roman kingdom as it had already been for pagans.   On a side note Sunday is not a biblical day of rest, Saturday is.  It was man who made it so.

So, knowing December was not in fact when Jesus was born and there is much speculation as to exactly when he was born though all the “speculated dates” are in very hot months so the snow would certainly be obsolete.

According to the Bible the Magi did not visit until Jesus was two not to mention there is much speculation as to exactly who the Magi were. So they would not have been there not to mention that there is nothing saying there were three of them.

Let’s not leave out the fact that Mathew and Luke have very different accounts of his birth.

I do not know if I need to go on much further but if I do please let me know.

So based on this information I certainly do not see the problem with an atheist sign being presented with the nativity, It is called freedom of religion. It would not bother me if there were something representing the other faiths that celebrate during this time perhaps a Menorah for Hanukkah as well, something for Yule?

What did bother me is the sign is was intrusive looking, however after reading the article it seems a wall plaque is on order but the atheists felt it important enough to have their voices heard now, so this is fine, it had been planned for this ugly sign to be there all the time I perhaps would have not been so easily swayed to the side of the atheists.

I like that their sign says “keep state and church separate” as it should be. Though there is no reason why they cannot have an area in the courthouse devoted to freedom of religion/expression.  It is in my humble opinion that they should allow all or none.

Christians think the sign is offensive but do Christians not think their displays of Faith are not offensive to atheists?

I believe in God so I just ignore anything atheists have to say, I will not let them bother me. I suppose what is right for the believer is right for those who do not.

I believe in God but do not ignore what others have to say because often time it will lead to knowledge that what I had believed was wrong.  I would rather steep my faith in fact than ignorance.

I look at the nativity now with different eyes.  I see it as a kind gesture not a fact.

I get mad when I hear people still being taught men and women have a different amount of ribs and madder still when Mary M is referred to as a whore.

thx posting, nice to read and I only can agree!

I think all should be welcome to display their belief as long as whatever is being displayed isn't an attack of any other belief or believers.  It really should be open to all or to no one at all, and how the belief is expressed is what should be allowed or rejected.
