It's raining feathers... HAWK

Added: Monday, March 2nd 2009 at 4:06am by Margar3t

I am sitting out on the back porch while I am sitting there....
I see something floating down from the sky... first one, then two, then more...
I finally realize the floating items are feathers, thinking in my mind how odd that is and wondering where all the feathers are coming from. My husband is getting some things out of the storage room. I say to my him...
"Hey, it's raining feathers", he comes out of the storage room looks up and says...
"that is because there is a hawk plucking a bird on the telephone pole"

From where I am sitting I can't even see the telephone pole, I move, see the hawk and say... "I am going to get my camera" the photos below of of the hawk and a surprise!

Hawk on pole from my porch.

Now I have walked across the yard to get a closer view.

Yep, he is for sure eating something...

More eating, his foot is on the something and he is tearing off pieces with his beak.

Then he looks up... I like a moron start messing with my camera settings and he flys away.... I pull backup the camera to my eye to try to get a shot of him flying off and...

This appears in my lens... a much bigger bird!!

I am still a bit in shock seeing this but now knowing why the other hawk flew off.

As you can see this hawk is a LOT larger than the other hawk. I think this is a young red-tailed hawk. I also think he came by to take the little hawks food.

What an amazingly beautiful bird

What a cool sight

After a few moments he flys off.

What a cool and amazing sight!

Fish 2 Your photos are really good. My granddaughter and I watch hawks where we live. I love to watch them float (soar).

Thank you cathd, we have some hawks that live in a tall pine down the street. They are so much fun to watch. Thanks for your visit and comment. Hope you have a wonderful day.

Fish 2You too. Watching the birds in the summer from my front porch is so much fun. I have way too many bird feeders...

LOL, I know what you mean. I have been good with the seed feeders but the hummingbird feeders is another story. Take care!

You must have a really good camera and be very good with it.  These pictures are gorgeous!  Wow.  Absolutely stunning.  When I was younger, I took in an injured redtailed hawk just like this one.  My dad would bring home rabbits for him.  The hawk never let me get too close to him, but he did manage to calm a little every time I brought him his food.

Callula, These photos were taken with a digital rebel and a 75-300mm zoom lens. The pole is pretty close to our yard and the photograph of the hawks face is cropped in. Thank you so much for your complement, I am happy you enjoyed the photos.

I could not even imagine how cool it would be to help an injured hawk and how amazing it would be to feed it and take care of it... wonderful experience you have had, not one many others will have.

So glad you stopped by and let me know about it. Thank you for your comment and visit. Have a wonderful day.

Wow! Absolutely great close up shots of nature in flight!

Thank you blogmom. Hope you have a great day!

The Hawk is my favorite bird. They are so majestic.

I love your pics.

You are a very talented photographer!

Thank you so much JoAnneMor, I like  hawks too, they are just beautiful and such powerful birds. I am lucky to live in an area that has wildlife and to have a camera to capture it. Thank you for your wonderful complement on my photography. I enjoy taking photos and sharing them here very much. Have a wonderful day.

Please keep posting your photos.

I enjoy them very much.

I am the worl's worst photographer, yet I love beautiful photos.

Yours are alw3ays beautiful.

You have the eye that captures the moment in time, in a way others cannot!

Thank you so very much JoAnneMor. I am so happy to share my photos here and so glad to know you enjoy them. I will keep posting them. It is so wonderful to get such a nice complement as your. Thanks so much. Have a wonderful day!

It would be interesting to have a Hawk, or Falcon..humm???

Oh yes it would be anacoana but to keep one unless it was hurt would seem so unfair to such a wild and powerful bird. I am so lucky to live were I do and have such a wonderful view of the hawks and all the cool wildlife here. Thanks for your visit and comment. Have a great day!

All I can think of to say right now is....WOW!

Incredible!  The hawks are incredible, the pictures you got of them are incredible!  Maybe I could have said more than just "wow"...I think I will now say...

WOW! INCREDIBLE!

I just love your comments donnamg. It was an amazing sight to see. I am so lucky I was out there to see the hawks and to have a camera to take these photographs with also a place to share them and great friends like you to comment on them. Thanks again for your wonderful complement and for taking the time to stop by for a visit. Have a great day.

Beautiful pictures!!! Impressive bird of prey!!!

We have hundreds of Bald eagles come every year on Lake Couer d Alene.....and were not able to get any pics as nice as these......Good Job!!!

Thank you so very much Helen65 for such a nice complement. It was an amazing sight to see. I am lucky the pole the hawk was on is so close to our yard. I would love to see a bald eagle sometime in the wild. I have seen them in zoos and am always surprised at how big they are. I think they have some in Northern Arizona, perhaps some day I will get to see one. Thank you for taking the time to stop by and  visit and leave such a nice comment. Have a great day

WOW this are so cool, what great shots you captured.

Thanks unknown person! Glad you enjoyed them.

You are welcome queenie, I am so glad you enjoyed the post. Thanks for stopping by to visit and leave such a nice comment. Have a wonderful day.

These pictures are just awesome!  They are really beautiful birds, but I believe it is illegal to keep a hawk in captivity.  A hawk flew onto the fence behind a pet shop where I worked in CA and the owner brought it into the shop and fed it.  A customer came in and saw it and turned her in to the authorities who came and got it and gave her a citation.  This was in the 70's.   I wish my zoom lens was as strong as yours.!

Thanks so much Kat-Al, I think one would need a special permit to keep a bird of prey. I like them free soring around the neighborhood. The red-tailed hawks live in a big pine tree down the street. I am not sure where the others live. I am just happy to see them stop by. My zoom lens is a 75-300mm it fits on the canon rebel. The pole is not too tall and it is about 10 or 20 feet from the back of the wall, so really I was quite close. I have to admit the photo of the hawks head is cropped in so everyone could see how pretty his face was.

Thanks so much for your wonderful comment and for taking time to stop by for a visit and leave a comment. Have a great day.

FRICKEN AMAZING!!

Incredible! Got that portfolio sent to NatGeo yet?

LOL, thank you SimplyTrace, what a lovely complement. I only wish I had the skill to work or NG. Thank you so much for taking time to visit and leaving such a nice comment. Have a good day.

You really don't believe it's all luck, do you? Granted, a large portion of wildlife photography IS the luck of being in the right place at the right time. But you don't post one incredible photo and then a dozen mediocre ones. Post after post, they are delightfully composed, and tend to capture not just the animal or object, but the essence of it.

You are far too kind SimplyTrace and I do love your complement more than you can know. I have seen NG and those photos are amazing and I am sure the photographers are highly competitive (something I am not) I do love taking photos and so enjoy sharing them. I love to get wonderful complements like yours.

If for some reason I went insane and actually though NG would care about one of my photos I would have no idea how to let them see it... any ideas? a link? :)

Thank you so much your comment has meant the world to me. It is an amazing complement being compared to some of the most talented photographers in the world. Thank you again from the bottom of my heart. Have a wonderful evening!!!
You have just made mine.

Well, now THAT's a good question...I'm sure NG gets a ton of unsolicited stuff, just like any other publisher. I'll try to do a bit of research and see if I can find out for you.

But I don't doubt that you're right about it being highly competitive, and the last thing you want to do is take something you love doing and turn it into an ulcer. Still...getting a photo published now and then would certainly be neat, even if it wasn't something you wanted to chase full time.

Yes, SimplyTrace getting a photo published now and then would be wonderful. I have passed my time of even thinking of
"take something I love doing and turn it into an ulcer" I think that is more for younger people. :) It would be fun to take photos all day. What would be really fun is to turn them into cards and calendars and stuff...  But then I would have to find a place to sell them.

Thanks so much for your wonderful complements. Have a great day!

No I missed this one, but I now officially subscribed so I shouldn't miss any more. You are quite the photographer!{#apploud.gif}{#basic-cool.gif}

Thank you so very much ekyprogressive, such wonderful complements, the subscription and your comment. I am having such fun here posting my photos and getting all the feedback! Thank you very much for taking time to stop by and look around> Have a wonderful evening!!!

Wow! Great pictures of the hawks. They are beautiful birds.

I agree Patty, amazing and beautiful creatures.  I am so lucky to live where I can see them. I was also so fortunate to have been able to photograph this. Thanks so much for your visit and comment. Have a great evening

WOW!!!

Thanks Anonymous visitor from outside of blogster. So nice of you to comment. Have a great day!

Great sequence of shots. I do believe that the first bird isn't a hawk, but a merlin, a falcon.  Keep shooting.

Yes I am sure you are correct, I just call him a little hawk. The first one seemed big until the other one came up.:) Thanks for your visit, for the information and comment. Have a great night.

I love taking photos. I want to go to this. http://www.desertmuseum.org/visit/events_freeflights.php Check out the video link.
