Hawk and little bird

There is a family of three red hawks living near by. They like to land on this telephone pole.  One morning while I was out in the yard I one of them screetching. I looked over at the pole and sure enought one of them was sitting on the pole, but oddly enough there was a little mocking bird diving at the hawk. The mocking bird kept coming back and was tormenting the hawk that was trying to enjoy some dead rodent he had with him, this went on and on until the hawk finally could no longer take it and flew away with rodent in tow. I got a few photos of the event, they are not the best photos but still they show how small the mocking bird is compaired to the hawk.

We think the mocking bird may have a nest near by and is not too excited about a hawk perched above his/her nest.

Here you can see the size of the silly mocking bird.

Though this photo is blurry, you can kind of see the rodent in the hawks tallons.

This one you can clearly see the rodent hanging down, and the tiny mocking bird way up a the top of the photo. I have to wonder why the hawk never goes after the mocking bird, maybe he does not want to loose his rodent.

Kewl beans! :) Love the pics!

Thanks. I get to see lots of wildlife where I live. I will try to post more photos of stuff I see. Thanks for the comment

Actually, those are great shots!  This was really a good post and I enjoyed it.  I do have two possible guesses as to why a hawk will just "move on" instead of dealing with the mockingbird.  First, if it is a female mockingbird protecting a nest, then fighting with any "mommy" can be extremely violent and even deadly because those "mommies" suddenly take on  a strength that is beyond belief.  Second, the mockingbird, though smaller, can actually "flit" and dart faster, being a painful and even an injury-injury causing tormenter.  The hawk would have to rely more heavily on concise, direct hits, while the mockingbird can deliver a bunch of nasty "rabbit punches".  (These are only guesses, I promise you.)

Silly me.... I was kind of thinking the hawk was only worried about his rodent. (keeping it from the little bird) Your ideas are great. I am glad you enjoyed the post.
