Another Snake

We saw another snake this weekend. He was hiding out near the porch, when my huband went out the snake took off and hid in these bricks.

He was completely black, very dark.

Ah but round pupils means... not poisonous.

I think he might be one of these king snakes but I am not snake expert.

Edit: adding photos here so snake knowers can see his head.

I like the tongue shot.

oh lord.... so that's how you know if they're poisonous or not! [grinning]

missed your pics!!!!

hugs!

Yes someone said that but now looking it up I found "Coral snakes do not have the triangular shaped heads and elliptical pupil like most poisonous snakes have."
So I guess you have to know your snakes. :) I don't touch them, only photograph them from further away than I think they could strike.

Missed seeing you.:) Hope all is well.

As of the moment...things are a bit settling down on my end of the world. I'll try to be more active on blogster again. [smiles]

Good to know things are settling down. I wish you all good things.

LIKEWISE! [smiles]

I think that "eye" thing is a great piece of information!!! Just as long as I can remember which is which when I'm staring one down face to face..LOL...great picture.

If I were you I would not wait to see his eye, just back off.:) I think the eye that looks like a cat's eye is always poisonous but the round eye could go either way. I will have to look into it more.

Oooh! A pretty! That actually looks a lot like a black rat snake, since the head shape is well-defined. In the pics on the link, their heads all look sort of bullet like, like their necks ended in a rounded point at their noses.

You are probably right. I was just guessing, looking up black snake Arizona. This site is cool because it goes by pattern and color of the skin. http://www.reptilesofaz.org/herp-snakes.html There were other black snakes on there so I could be totally wrong. Or it could be someone's pet snake escaped. I will have to go look for black rat snake and see what they look like, and if they are native here. Thanks for the snake ID.

I think trace is correct, that's a rat snake.  VERY beneficial to have around, and harmless to humans.

Rats, I was thinking maybe he was this coach snake. http://www.reptilesofaz.org/Snakes-Subpages/h-c-flagellum.html Well you all know snakes not me. I just think they are cool looking. He was so not interested in us seeing him. He really wanted us to just go away.:) We did and he took off somewhere.

He's a friend to have around....good shots!

Thank you. Maybe he will eat some scorpions. :)

He is not nearly as scary looking as the rattlesnake.  He reminds me of what we call a black racer here.   Hopefully he likes scorpions and turantulas for dinner.

Coral snakes have round heads, but they can be deadly.  They don't strike like other poisonous snakes, but bite onto the skin and don't let go.  We were warned about them when we lived in south Florida.

Good pictures!

I have no idea what he is. He seemed pretty shy. My husband called him a racer but I couldn't find any racer snakes that were black in color listed under the AZ snakes. He is pretty whatever he is. So glad you enjoyed the photos. I have never seen a coral snake in the wild.

Hey good to know. This is the second snake we have seen in the yard this year. The other one was not black. Here is the other one incase you missed it http://www.blogster.com/margar3t/something-we-almost-never-see

Hum, I was hoping he would eat scorpions. :)

Well, guess that would be a bummer for the bird but I guess we all have to eat. :) The birds here often get a hand out... now I guess the snakes do too. My feeder hangs up high and we toss out a cup of food to the quail in the evening, they munch it down in no time. They don't hang around long after that. I would guess the snake might eat my lizard friends that keep my garden free from bugs, that would be a drag, hopefully he won't eat too many of them and maybe just dine on mice and scorpions.

Not very cuddly...but everything that's good is not necessarily appealing.

So, what's his name? {#basic-laugh.gif}

You do need to try to keep him around and I really want to know if he eats scorpions.

I forgot to ask him what his name was. :) It would be cool to see him again. We don't often see snakes. This must be a good year for snakes because this is the second one we have seen in the yard this year. The other one looked different, it was not black, you can see him here if you want http://www.blogster.com/margar3t/something-we-almost-never-see He was cool looking.

the photos are great, especially the second to last one, thanks for the share!

Thanks so much. My blog is mostly photos. Mostly stuff I see around here.

I'm with Kat-Al...it looks just like what we call black racers, here in Florida.  They are good snakes to have around--they eat lots of bugs, small rodents 'n such.  Snakes give me the heebie-jeebies...not many things in this world I will admit to being afraid of, but they really scare the crap out of me...LOL!  Even the 'good' ones!

:) good to know, he seemed way more afraid of us than we were of him. I have no idea where he went but he is not in the flower bed anymore.

They like to hang out at your house don't they? LOL!  I remember seeing quite a few snakes when I was a kid growing up in southern NM.  Cool pictures!:)

Jenn

Thanks, This is the second snake we have seen this year. We don't usually see them. He is pretty. He was so not as into seeing us as we were into seeing him. He is long gone now.

I bet he wasn't they will usually hide or attack depending if they feel cornered and what kind they are.

He ran (slithered) and hid. He wanted nothing to do with us except get away.

WOW

I know, it was quite a surprise. We don't often see snakes and I have never seen a jet black one like this before, very cool

Very snazzy

He is awesome looking isn't he/she.

Its just a normal black snake. We used to call them black racers

Normal to you maybe.:) I have never seen one before. I thought it was very cool.
