Linnaeus: Some Facts
A LINNAEAN CHRONOLOGY
1707 Carl (Nilsson) Linnaeus born on May 23 in Råshult, Småland. He comes from a family of clergymen in the village of Stenbrohult, some miles Southeast of Växjö in the Province of Småland.
1725 Örtaboken, Linnaeus writes his earliest manuscript, sometimes referred to as ‘The Linnaeus Code’
1727 Studies medicine in Lund
1728 Moves to Uppsala and continues his studies in medicine
1729 Writes his first academic paper, Præludia sponsaliorum plantarum ("On the prelude to the wedding of plants").
1732 Sent to Lapland on a research journey by the Royal Academy of Sciences. Writes Iter Lapponicum.
1734 Exploration in Dalarna, where he meets his future bride, Sara Elisabeth Moræaus. Writes Iter Darlecarlicum.
1735 Publishes the first edition of Systema Naturæ—his famous work classifying the natural world and including the sexual system of botanical classification. Goes to Harderwijk, Holland, where he defends his doctoral thesis, on malaria. Travels to Denmark and Germany. Lives and works for three years in Holland, France and England. Linnaeus corresponds extensively with scientists throughout the world. Until his death in 1778, Linnaeus receives more than 3000 letters from Europe, America, Asia and Africa from natural scientists and disciples sent out by him on expeditions throughout the world. All in all Linnaeus has more than 600 correspondents, being 95% of the letters either in Swedish or Latin.
1738 Returns to Sweden. Practices medicine in Stockholm.
1739 Founder member of the Royal Swedish Academy of Sciences in Stockholm and its first President. Marries Sara Moræaus.
1741 Professor of Medicine at Uppsala University. Travels during the year to Gotland and Öland, commissioned by the parliament, to explore natural resources. Linnaeus' first child, also called Carl, is born. Linnaeus becomes popular as a teacher and his biological explorations in the surroundings of Uppsala attract many students. He improves the existing botanical garden in Uppsala, creating one of the foremost gardens in the world. There, he begins his botanical andzoological teachings (for he also kept animals in the garden).
1744 Linnaeus becomes Secretary of the Academy of Sciences in Uppsala
1746 Västergötland Journey
1749 Skåne Journey
1750 Rector of Uppsala University (until 1772)
1753 Species plantarum, includes his system for giving Latin names to plants. Internationally agreed as the starting point of modern botanical nomenclature.
1757 Ennobled. Linnaeus made a nobleman for his contributions to the nation and to science. He takes the name Carl von Linné.
1758 Tenth edition of Systema Naturae presents his system for giving Latin names to animals, i.e., the first application of binomial taxonomy in zoology, which establishes a new system for biological classification. Internationally accepted as the starting point of modern zoological nomenclature.
1768 Publishes the final edition of Systema Naturæ, in which the binary naming system is for the first time applied to all known living things.
1778 Linnaeus dies.
1784 Linnaean collections sold to England. Today housed in the Linnaean Society in London.
1806 Publication of A General System of Nature: Through the Three Grand Kingdoms of Animals, Vegetables, and Minerals; Systematically Divided into Their Several Classes, Orders, Genera, Species, and Varieties, with Their Habitations, Manners, Economy, Structure, and Peculiarities (London: Printed for Lackington, Allen and Co., Temple of the Muses, Finsbury-Square).
2007 In the Spirit of Linnaeus: The Tercentenary Lectures on Science and Art, by Mariano Akerman, Researcher and Lecturer, Manila, 11 January – 22 February 2007.

Professor of Medicine at the Upsala University.. My sister and my brother in law have been working and doing reserch there for two years.. They loved it. She is a psichiatrist, he a neurologist.
