A Good Tip in Case the Power Goes Out.......

Let there be light!!
I have a friend who used her solar lights inside at night when her current was off during the hurricane. She stuck them in a jar or bottle and said they gave off plenty of 'free light'. She put one in each room and would put them back outside in the daytime and bring them in at night as long as the current was off. They are safe to use and cheaper than batteries. Bring in a solar light one night and test it.
Due to a thunderstorm, we lost power for about 5 hours. We were scrambling around in the darkness, looking for matches, candles, flashlights, etc. We looked outside, and noticed our solar lights shining brightly all around our patio, stairs, dock, etc. They were beautiful. My wife walked outside, and brought several of the solar lights inside.
We stuck the solar light pipes into plastic drink bottles containers and they made the nicest, brightest, safest, lighting you could ever imagine. We put one in the bathroom, the kitchen, the living room, etc. There was plenty of light. There are all types of solar lights available. We bought ours at Harbor Freight. We put them all around our yard. They looknice and they do not attract flying bugs like the outdoor lights around our doorway.
The lights we have fit into the small (20 oz) water bottles and they also fit into most of the larger liter bottles. If you need a weight in the plastic bottle to keep them from tipping over, you can put a few of the pretty colorful "flat marbles" that they put in aquariums, and vases. (you can also use sand, aquarium gravel, etc., whatever you have available).
The lights we have were perfect inside our home. They burn all night long if you need them. The next day, you just take your solar lights back
outside and they will instantly recharge and be ready for you to use again any time you need them.Perfect for power outages, hurricanes, etc. I never thought of it and now you don't have to.

Great idea.  Never would have thought of this.

Me either WW. We never know when our power might go out, so it would be worth a try. Thanks. :)

Good IDEA!!

I agree with you Rachel. :)

What a clever idea.  I would never have thought of doing that.

I think it is a very good idea to Kat. Seems we could save on electricity if we did it through out the year. You think?

Yeah, probably...if one remembered to take the lights out every morning to be recharged.  And of course, even here in the 'Sunshine State' we have days without that much sunshine, especially during the summer rainy season.   It rained most of the night last night, and altho it stopped by mid-morning, it was mostly cloudy and overcast all day.  Ours are pretty old, and don't hold much of a charge anymore...usually 3-4 hours...I just looked, they didn't come on at all tonight.

Yes, we  have had some cloudy days lately here too and our rain came through yesterday afternoon. It got really dark and scary looking for a while and then it quickly moved on out. We got some heavy rain, but we did need the rain. I just don't like bad weather.

I really like this idea!

Me to Nota, Thanks!

Great, sent it out.

Thanks Con! :)

What a neat idea.  Safer than candles.  I'm going right now to try one.

Let us know how yours turns out arkmama. Thanks! :)

The ones across the front of the house are small with copper shades.  I took it into a dark bedroom and closed the door.  It didn't give much light but as I stood there, I could make out shapes in the room.  Now I have some big ones down the drive, but there could be snakes and coyotes and bears and tigers and lions and all kinds of scary things out there, so I will stick one of them close to the house tomorrow and try it tomorrow night.

Good and maybe they will give you more light. No, don't get bit by a snake, or any of those other criters. OMG. Keep us posted. :)

It seems we've had enough occasional power outages that we are well prepared. We have flashlights and about 5 lanterns of various sorts to place around the house. Hubby found these "sticks" at Lowes that are like a dollar a piece. You just bend them, and something breaks and it lights up...you can hang them on the walls all around the house and they stay lit for about 5 or 6 hours. Very handy. They are called Safety Light Sticks and come in a few different colors. We always keep a bunch of them on hand.

You do sound well prepared Mary, we have a couple of large lanterns on hand and candles in various types of jars, but we don't have any safety light sticks, I have heard of them before. I can never keep up with my flash lights, when I need one and I don't know how many I have bought. lol.

Great idea.

Thank you, I think it sounds like a good idea too. :)

Where have I been hiding? I dont think I know or have seen such a thing. I must go and see if I can find them....where do you get them from, a hardware store?  Geez, I have been away too long....lol.

I had never heard of them either Maria, until I read this article. I suppose a hardware store would be a good place to start looking for them. I will be checking also. Thanks. :)

This is a great idea for sure.  Usually if we have a storm and power goes off, we won't have sun for a day or two and they wouldn't recharge.   Lowe's and Home Depot have them.

I go to lowe's and home depot a lot lately, maybe I can find me some. It would be worth it because that really sounds like a good idea. I had never heard of those before today. Thanks.

cool idea mam...:)

Yes it is southpak! Thank you. :)

Floridalady, that is one great idea I never would have thought of it. James news

I agree with you james. It certainly worth trying. Thanks. :)

Thanks for the info. I had no idea. I have plenty of candles, flashlights, up to date batteries, etc. But had never heard about this. Learn something new every day.

I had never heard of this either until I read the article, but it does sound like a good idea. :)

Cool idea...I think I will try this too! Thanks Allie!

I agree with you dphilip. It does sould like a good idea. :)
