AG Garland Seeks to Hand Off SCOTUS Protection
During a Senate Appropriations subcommittee hearing on March 28, Attorney General Merrick Garland suggested that he wanted to stop using US Marshals in the protective detail of Supreme Court justices and hand that responsibility back to the SCOTUS police.
“We’re hoping this isn’t a long-term solution for the justices because there are a lot of courts around the country,” Garland said. “And the marshals have traditional security responsibilities — and that’s to say nothing of their fugitive apprehension responsibilities.”
Protection Costs: As reported by Politico, “the Marshals Service is seeking $21 million to pay for 42 additional deputy marshals in the next fiscal year” to cover ongoing SCOTUS protection. If that duty were to return to Supreme Court Police, an additional $5.9 million has been requested.
