3013 London Olympics 2012 - Is This The Best You Have?

Added: Thursday, July 26th 2012 at 12:26pm by fangio821

Forgive me if my typing is a little bit disjointed this evening.  I saw something on the early evening news about a guy from the USA called Mitt Romney - is that his real name? which has caused me to start laughing and I am finding it difficult to stop.

Anyway, he was supposedly coming here as some sort of an ambassador/tourist to visit the London Olympic Games which is due to kick off tomorrow evening.

And he put his foot in it, big time, several times.

http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-politics-18995166

Just click on the link to read and see what he said and did; like calling the leader of the opposition Mr Leader!  Doh! This is England, not China.

He isn't doing an awful lot to endear himself.  Fortunately we do have tens of thousands of decent intelligent Americans spending their money over here at the moment, and for that we say a big "Thank You, and hope you have a wonderful holiday".

All Olympic Games are meant to be free of political propaganda, yet the whole set-up remains politically poisoned - like Berlin in 1936 - just one example.

Just a misfortune of course,  the  one hour delay for an early event in London this time,  with the raising of the North Korean flag instead of the South Korean. Faux pas - or something like that.

My own feeling is that the world is now in such a warlike state,  that sport needs to return to being national,  rather than global. Every four years the cost of security increases by tens of billions $$$$$$$$$ - yet perfect safety remains an impossibility.

I hope I have not upset the apple cart! All the very best for the 2012 Olympics!

PS: I have a London Olympic event featured on my blog. You may have missed out on that one.

Apple cart?  No, not at all.

I have no doubt there will be one or two foul ups in the next few weeks, but I agree with your sentiments that it is safe, and the it is a good show.

Perfect comment!!!

Mr. Leader?  We call the leader of the House of Representatives the Speaker of the House and his formal address is "Mister Speaker"...so a gaff like that is understandable.  He isn't running for prime minister of England, and he has no official status on this visit.  But being a conservative, he draws a lot of fire wherever he goes so the reactions he got in Jolly Old are not surprising.  Considering the choice:  Mitt or Barry...I consider it a no-brainer.  But that's just me, I no doubt would receive the same kind of derision if I were to visit the Misty Isles.

" I no doubt would receive the same kind of derision if I were to visit the Misty Isles."

I don;t think so.  I do feel he is not proving to be the best ambassador for the US though.

Damn.  Our plan was to start exporting our idiots to England.  Now Romney has gone and fouled that all up.  Stupid Republican.

Maybe he'll stay there???? Maybe his followers will follow him???? Okay I'll stop dreaming!

Vee are too shmart for you!!

FYI, "Governor" Willard Mitt Romney is his correct title and name, but then I wouldn't expect you to know that. He took over the leadership of the 2002 Salt Lake City winter Olympics (held in a city of 2 1/2 million people) when it was flailing and failing. It was a huge success because of his leadership. So Gov. Romney knows exactly what he's talking about. But I wouldn't expect the average Brit to know about that either.

It's funny because all I have heard on the news here about the London Olympics is all of the security problems that have arisen (which is a very big deal considering the horrible terrorist attacks in past Olympics). I hope everything will be safe for everyone.

The only other thing I heard about is the fervid speculation about how much sex the world's athletes might engage in between events.

http://www.theglobeandmail.com/sports/olympics/olympic-games-and-sex-between-athletes-go-hand-in-hand/article4426289/

British tabloids will no doubt have a field day with that subject.

I think someone over here came out with a good reply to Mitt's gaff.

Something on the lines of,"So he did a good job in Salt Lake.  Wonder how he would have coped in a city with a big population like London?"

The Salt Lake Olympics were the first Games held in this country since 911. Salt Lake has a population of 2 1/2 million people which is not exactly small. And yes I do realize that London has 8 million people.

Romney transformed a failing, scandal-ridden situation and he didn't just "cope", he made the Olympics a total success in Salt Lake City. The games were also financially successful raising more money with fewer sponsors than any prior Olympic Games , which left SLOC with a surplus of $40 million at the conclusion of the games. The surplus was used to create the Utah Athletic Foundation, which maintains and operates many of the remaining Olympic venues.

Haven't the British press, TV and the British people themselves have been very critical about how their own London Olympics have been run so far? That's what we have been hearing.

In light of the terrorist history and murders during prior Olympic Games, the number one priority of the games is security, for athletes and the public...and there were no incidents in Salt Lake.

And the above is a good example of Mitt's 'followers'--he nessed up and not a Republican will admit it and of course if someone apologizes for his stupid remarks they will say America looks weak!.

All Republicans are interested in other people's sex life because they don't have any of their own--should I mention that Murdoch owns most of the Right/conservative papers and a few TV stations here in the USA?

That Mitt is running for president here--and that is not funny!

Fangio--for the record--I have NEVER heard anyone refer to Mitt as "Governor" since he started to run for office as president LOL

On the other hand, the British press has been very selective with it's outrage over Obama's numerous gaffes directed your way so...how about you send the Churchill bust back and we'll send you 0bama? We'll go first.  Thanks in advance.

Not a fair swop!!

Fangio, I guess they (Republicans) want to forget that the Olympics are about the athletes (who had A LOT of sex at the last summer Olympics)--sorry you are getting bashed and though they may not like it I will apologize for all those who are being RUDE TO YOU for your post and are writing anti-British posts as retaliation--not all Americans are rude--by the way read winning who is a Republican and basically says the same thing you did.

Thanks for your concern Martin, but I don't think anyone is being deliberately rude, which is why I am being so typically British and retaining a stiff upper lip and being kind to lesser mortals.

That's very kind of you...LOL!  You're OK in my book, Fangio, because you know how the world turns - you throw something controversial in the ring and you're met with controversial reaction.  Rude?  No.  It's fair.

Yes fangio the British are so much more civilized than the Americans! :O)

P.S. - There are deliberately rude Americans just as there are no doubt deliberately rude Brits, but they're easy to spot since they're always trying to start an argument and then cry "foul" when it's pointed out...

Not sure about that one GM.

I love 'stiff upper lips' almost as much as I love Republican women!!! LOL

IMHO you may keep Mr Romney in your country!  {#rofl.gif}

And I thought you were my friend!!

I am your friend, send him back lol to the U. S.

OK.  Will do.  I might even gift wrap him for you.

LOL no gift wrap, I dislike politics so very much:(  We are just being overloaded on the mud slinging.

OK.  Just a plain brown wrapper then.

LOL that will do for the contents!  Poo!

Fangio,  I love you and your country, but after watching that dreadful opening ceremoniy last night, I have to ask you "Is This The Best You Have?"

The Industrial Revolution was drab and colorless and the National Health Care push with the big blow up baby was plain bizarre and unnecessary.  The Olympics is supposed to be about bringing all countries of the world together in peace and sportsmanship and not a political platform for any one country.

I admit the James Bond and Queen parachuting idea was hilarious, but even Her Royal Magesty seemed glum and bored.  She was seen looking down and picking at her fingernails when the Great Britain team paraded past!  Perhaps she was as disappointed as everyone else seems to be.

You said it yourself..........We are England and not China!  It was no Beijing!

Kat Al - I have to hold up my hand and agree with you.  I thought most of the opening ceremony was rubbish, but if you read the news reviews from all around the world everyone seemed to like it.

Maybe you and Polly and myself have a different outlook.  It was weird to say the least.

The people who dreamed up the "theme" for the ceremony should be taken out for a lashing!   They made it all about England when it should have been about all countries coming together in peace and unity for the games.  I know that England has more to offer than Mary Poppins, the Beatles and National Health Care.  lol

The Queen's solemn behavior gave cause to wonder what is wrong.  Was Prince Phillip by her side?  I thought I saw him standing close, but not sure.

Yes, it was all weird!

Was going to speak my mind also but then it wouldn't be politically correct. An intelligent liberal always knows how to scream louder.
