Do you like getting/giving the star rating system at blogster?

  • Yes, I like it...
  • No I don't like it...
  • I don't care either way...

I like giving people stars and I almost always give five stars because I think if you make the effort to contribute something, you deserve all the kudos you can for it...but i know a lot of times people get upset if they are "down starred" and given only one star...I was thinking about that this morning which prompted to post this poll...what do you think?

some peopl down star becaused they don't like the blogger rather than it being based on what the blogger wrote. That's why (see below) I think stars should be by eacy comment box. That way only people who comment can rate and with it being by the comment box, you don't forget. This also gets rid of people who down star for reasons other than the topic or opinion on the blog.

That's a great idea!

jezz..sorry for all the spelling mistakes...laying in bed watching TV and chatting on yahoo while answering your poll. multitasking = poor spelling on my part

If I remember to do it, I either give 5 stars or none. I do not like to down grade people. Their work is subjective not necessarily analytical. I am not their teacher and as such I do not "grade".

Me too...I like to give stars to people after I comment on their blog and if they respond...I like getting them too, but it doesn't really matter in the big picture very much...there are billion of stars out there!

I often do not comment for lack of time recently or sometimes lack of words. Yep, I do run out of words...LOL!

I almost ALWAYS rate every blog I read. However, it would be nice to have the rating by your comment box, because I know people forget. Then maybe the total could be at the top of the blog. Sometimes I've thought only people who comment should be able to rate a blog.

I wish in many ways it was just one star with the total stars at the top.

Not a bad idea. I never get like 3 stars to someone. Like you..I either give 5 or none. And  usually none because I forgot. But on, say, political blogs I disagree with...I simply don't rate them.

That is usually what I do on political blogs when I even think about the stars. I have noticed on some blogs that they have been graded down for no seeming reason at all. Since one in particular was in the recent "discussion" I have to figure someone is downgrading their stars out of "hard feelings" because they were not "agreed with".

Juvenile behavior at best....

I kind of like the "like" and "dislike" button, but it should be beside each comment, so you know who liked or disliked your blog and then maybe the total like or dislikes are at the top of the blog. people would be less likely to DISLIKE for only personal reasons since it's left beside their comment.

LOL! See my comment to rica

Thats a great idea cats...the location of the stars and only commenter's can rate.

But personally, I don't care much about stars. But I always rate blogs I read.

I don't really care either way, if i remember I give them. Almost always when i do I give a 5.

Right on...

There are times when I agree with the post but would not have anything substantial to say. That's when i use the star rating system....

That's a good way to use the system...

that's what I do too!

Great minds think alike!

...although I would prefer it to be the like/dislike button. I can like a post..or 'dislike' it if i disagree....

That's a good idea too...maybe putting ILC's suggestion of stars inside the comments box and your idea of like/dislike feature on the top of the blog would be pretty cool...

yep!

Thumbs up or down might be simpler...they could even be at the top with a number beside them....

agreed!

but if the rating was beside your comment box...you wouldn't forget. then they can be totalled at the top!!

Do you always give 5 stars or do you base your rating on how much you like/agree with the post (or poster)? I have given less than five stars on a few blogs because I didn't like what I saw going on...

I almost always give 5 stars...why not? Someone usually has put at least a minimal amount of work on their blog. I seldom give 4, 3, 2....I have given 0 if it was a "mean" blog. But like I said, if it were political and I disagreed, I usually just read and leave without rating.

or maybe just get rid of the stars and do a like/dislike with a total at the top. but i like having something next to my comment box..it's too easy to forget to rate it once you hit post comment.

True...I like your idea and Rica's combined though...

Me too...when I give less than five stars it's because I have strong feelings against something the blog said or how the situations is "playing out" in the comments section...

Write up the idea and send it to Golfers since he says he's blogging again. If he likes it, he can give it to Bobski for programming. :-) change is good. The system we have is only fair.

you note i'm the only one who's give you five stars...LOL. everyone else forgot haha

The stars serve no purpose--most people don't even 'use' them except as a to get even thing--plus maybe if you get a cookie for 5,000 stars it would be better :O)

Yeah, we need more cookies around here...more give-aways!

I almost never remember to rate the posts with stars....But I'm with some others here, I either give a 5 or nothing at all, when I do think about it.  I also like cat's idea of putting the star thingy down by comments, and you can't rate it unless you've also made some kind of comment.  I know there are people here who will give a 1 star rating to one that's gotten mostly 5's--just because they don't like the blogger or the subject matter, ie political view, etc.

That sounds sensible....Cat's idea does. When people down star based on a bias, it's sort of like a slap or something...

That's what ILC was saying about putting the star feature into the comment box...then you can leave stars and know who likes what and how much...

Doesn't matter to me...some people take stars too seriously...but I always try to remember to rate.  Its usually 5 or nothing.

Cool...some people do get into a tizzy when it comes to their stars, don't they?

I usually use the star system when I read a blog, and it is nicely written, but I have nothing to contribute to the discussion.  Then I give five stars.  I like Ilovecats idea about putting the star system in the comment box, and rica like or dislike.  I think it's kind of sorry when you come across a beautifully written blog and it has been downstarred because of pure spite by a blenemy.  That's sad.

Blenemy = Great Word! Yeah, it's sad, but nothing to fret over...Thanks for stopping by Missy, it's always nice to hear from you!

That's interesting, when you're "starred down" it means you're hitting a target within your audience...and even if it's only one star, that's more than none!

Very good logic pd. I've always said I don't care about the stars, but I have to admit, I always check them, so there must be a reason. Getting voted down can be annoying and gratifying at the same time since you know they did it in anger, but they also let you know you've struck a chord. I got a vote down on my most recent post, and felt bad because I'm pretty sure who did it, and realized my post probably made the blogger feel bad.

I agree with PD, if somebody is taking the time and making the effort to "star down" your blog, then you are making an impact...besides, I think, a star is a star is a star...better than no stars at all!

Thanks for stopping by Neo...I love your avatar/icon!

Thanks dp! I catch some heat for the avatar, but it has a purpose so I stick with it. :)

I had no idea about the star and it's rating. One bloger dropped me a PM telling me how it worked. I was down starring her, but I had no idea that is what I was doing. It seems to be more important to some than others. I have never put much thought into it, but your right about someone going to the trouble to write a blog. so now I will give 5 or nothing. But my own personal opinion is some take them much to serious. It's like a religion for them:(

Right...in the big picture, the stars are meaningless, but if somebody is going through the effort to write something, why not boost their ego a little?

I used to rate the blog content with stars but was informed that is not how it works. I think it would be more appropriate for it to be that way, but that's just me:) I like to boost ego's, if it's warranted:)

I always tend to forget. It's a hazard of having 5 million things going in my head at once. My brain is a noisy place. But I didn't forget this time!!!!{#basic-laugh.gif}

Well thanks...and thanks for stopping by too!

I have a noisy brain too, but it's better than being dead silent...

I think that's why I associate most things with music. Makes it easier to sort it all out. You're right, it's much better than silence!

When I get confused, I listen to the music play!

You are getting a lot of thoughts here on your post. Maybe you should put the most common agreed upon ideas together, send them to Tony, and give him the link to this post.....once the post has died down.

That's another good idea! I might just try that...

I must admit, I forget half the time because the stars are at the top before I have looked at the post. I think they should be at the bottom for after one reads the post... who knows if you like something until you see it?

Right, or like ILC suggested, put the stars inside the comments box...then we don;t forget to rate it, as well, as you can tell who's rating and maybe why...thanks for coming by Meg, it's always great to see your comments!

I just want it at the bottom for after you read the post... also I like keeping it anonymous.

so basically i might as well just delete all the ratings and replace it with a "yes" button. that makes me sad.

oh no! Don't. just a "like" or "dislike" button would be more like it. {#basic-laugh.gif}

so a "yes" button.

"no" buttons are obviously dumb because they will just make people sad they would rather not know people dislike them.

er good point. how about an.... agree/disagree button? I can disagree without making you sad...er....right?

Agree/disagree is a better way of putting it...

Facebook has like only button.... no chance to dislike

I like the thumbs up/thumbs down thing that way people can vote one way or the other but nothing in the middle.... also I like keeping it anonymous.

I like it just the way it is

Facebook is for morons! :)

Perhaps... I still can't figure out what it is all about, maybe I am not a moron after all. :)

{#apploud.gif} {#apploud.gif} {#apploud.gif} {#apploud.gif}

I respectfully disagree...I think FB has some great attributes...I use it to communicate with long distant and long lost friends, I am finding it to be a great place to share photos and I like the "pace" of communication with FB...besides, I get more business off of FB than any other site I utilize to promote the book...but this place reminds me of FB a little and it has a place for more insightful dialogues...but i like FB.

stars does not necessarily reflect the the opinion of the blogger. it can be biased sometimes and some just use it to upset bloggers they do not like. I care more about comments and frequent visits..

Yes, I like comments and visits more than stars too...

I like to give stars. However, I mostly give 5 stars if I like and article and give none is I don't like it or don't have an opinion on it.

That's a fair policy!

You see, I find that not many blog about not got any stars, but complain if they get 2 or 3 stars, however, no one complains if they get five stars either. Strange how psychology works. lol!

Yes, it's a mystery to me!

Great poll dp. Might be the first one I've ever voted on. Even if it is unintentional, most polls are biased, or give a potential false positive or false negative. I've been back and forth on the issue, but I voted "yes I like it." Mostly because I think it's good feedback. Thanks :)

Thanks Neo! It nice to see you here on my blog and hope that you find the time to visit again from time to time...you're always welcomed here!

Have a Great Week!
