Why I recommend electric toothbrushes to all of my patients

Being a dentist that sees hundreds of patients every month, I am always amazed at how few people use electric toothbrushes. I recommend them to everyone that doesn't use them, and in almost every case they come back loving them the next time they visit me. If you were one of these people that don't use an electric toothbrush, here are some of the benefits you might not have thought about.

First of all, electric toothbrushes are much better than regular toothbrushes when it comes to cleaning your teeth. While a regular toothbrush only cleans with your own movements, electric toothbrushes pulse, vibrate, or move back and forth in a way that cleans without you needing to move your arm. The best electric toothbrush can pulse up to 500 times per minute, which gives an amazing clean to your mouth. You'll be amazed at how great your mouth feels after the first time you try an electric toothbrush.

If a patient has braces or other types of orthodontics, I always recommend an electric toothbrush to them as well. It's very important to throughly clean your teeth if you have braces, and in most cases a regular toothbrush simply won't do the job. Some electric toothbrushes are specially designed for those with braces, which include specialized brush heads that clean between the teeth and braces. Unfortunately, braces will often make a brush head wear down quicker than normal, because of the metal. Even still, electric toothbrushes work much better in this case.

Some electric toothbrushes come with UV sanitizers which help eliminate germs and bacteria from your toothbrush heads. I also highly recommend keeping your toothbrush clean, and this is where an electric toothbrush with a UV sanitizer comes in very handy. The sanitizer uses UV light in a way that just kills up to 99% of bacteria, leaving your toothbrush clean like new.

The main reason I recommend electric toothbrushes to my patients is because of how much better they are at cleaning, but they also have the other benefits I mentioned. I think that electric toothbrushes are a great invention, and everyone should have one!
