Three salesmen decide to share a motel room. They are told the room is $30.00 and each man gives the clerk $10.00. The clerk later realizes the room is $25.00 so he takes five singles out of the drawer and tells the bellhop to give the men a refund. The bellhop decides for the sake of easy math to pocket two and give the men each one. So we have three men who each paid $9.00 the clerk has two his pocket, the cash drawer is correct. Taking the $27.00 the men paid (3 X $9.00=$27.00) and the two the bellhop kept, that is only $29.00. Where is the remaining dollar?

It's a trick, the math was done wrong. The men payed 27 dollars (25 to the hotel, 2 to the thieving bellhop) and got a three dollar refund. 27 + 3 = 30. Problem solved.

Each man gave up $10. 3X10=$30.00. Each man received a reund of $1.00 which means each paid $9.00 after the refund. $9.00 X 3 = $27.00, the bellhop has $2.00. $27.00 + $2.00 = $29.00. We are still missing $1.00.

You are correct, of course, the math was done incorrectly. Remember back in 3rd of 4th grade when the teacher you can't add apples and oranges? If you add 2 apples to 2 oranges you end up with 4 pieces of fruit, half apples half oranges.

In the case of the salesmen the math error is mutiplying 3 salesmen by $9.00. That is an ellegal operation, can't muliply money times people. You can onlly multiply money times money. You can divide money among people ($10.00 per person) or by time ($10.00 per hour) but not the other way around.
