A Memory
This is an entry I wrote a few days ago....
Recall your fondest memory about someone who has passed away
My Aunt Rena
Once, when I was a child, between the ages of three and five, I ran away from home. I traveled to my Aunt Rena's house. We lived in a single-wide trailer on a piece of land that was next door to her small white house. It was so close that mom would often let me walk next door to visit. Our home sat off of the main road so there was no worry about me being too close to traffic.
On this particular day, however, I did not ask permission to go visit. I just went. I do not remember why exactly but I do remember being upset over something. I knocked on the door and patiently awaited for her to answer. When she did, she asked, "Does mommy know you are here?" My reply was a simple, "yes" and I let myself in quickly.
As we sat in her dinning room and talked, I ate caramel creams. I always looked forward to this candy when I visited her. She kept them on a rolling stand beneath the microwave in a small crystal bowl. I was enjoying my second piece of candy when the phone rang. I knew I was busted. It did not take my mother long to realize I was gone. She asked if I was there and my aunt explained that I had led her to believe that my visiting her had been approved. After the conversation was over, Aunt Rena sent me home without reprimanding me. I am sure she figured I would receive plenty of that upon arriving home.
I do not remember if I was disciplined when I got home but I am sure I was reprimanded for it. I never did it again. I truly believe mom was relieved that I was somewhere safe, out of harms way.
While I was gone, I felt some sort of accomplishment. I don't know what I had accomplished exactly, but for just a little while, I felt free.
