For bodybuilders both diet and training are of equal importance. And if other one of these is missing the results unfortunately are lacking. Because of this fact many people aspiring to build muscle follow both an intense training regime and carefully planned diet. What follows in this article are generally accepted guidelines for healthy diet. Though it should be said that bodybuilders should take even more care with what they eat.

Any healthy diet, including one that builds muscle, should be heavy in nutrients . Therefore the diet should be heavy in fresh, whole foods, and consequently one should avoid refined and processed foods. In practical level this means you should emphasize fruits and vegetables and lean protein foods.

Another important element is elimination of unhealthy fats from the diet. These primarely are refined vegetable oils found in fried foods and many bakery products.

Refined sugar is another food you should eliminate from your diet. However not all sugar is sweet - in a manner of speaking. Though not really sugar white flour is like sugar in your body. It's effect on the body is exactly the same as white sugar's. In practice this means eliminating sweets, baked goods and breads made of white, refined flour. Real whole grain breads are still ok.

Finally any athlete should drink plenty of fresh, pure water . Exercise dehydrates the body and even minor levels of dehydration significantly deteriorate athletic performance.

What we have described here is nothing more than guidelines for healthy eating that anyone can benefit from. For bodybuilders and other athletes following these guidelines is even more important, due to extra stress placed on the body.
