Yet another great reason to update Internet Explorer...

For the web developer every day is a fight attempting to make code that works on as many browsers as possible. Trying to reinvent the internet is something Microsoft is great at, since more often than not anymore pages will break differently in IE6, IE7, and IE8.

This article contains opinions specific to the writer and are no way associated with the beliefs of anyone or anything else.

First off you people (as in Internet users) should be updating your web browser all the time anyway. There is no excuse for using the first build of IE7 when we are already on like the third build of IE8. Not only is it a pain for web developers but it is a danger to you, your health, my health (bob, what?), and potentially your pocketbook. I am serial.

For your review, I submit a hyperlink to ZDNet. Yet another critical exploit for Internet Explorer 6 and 7. "Why don't they fix it?" you ask? They did fix it, it is called Internet Explorer 8.

"For IE users unable (or unwilling) to upgrade to IE 8, you can disable Active Scripting in the Internet and Local intranet security zones."

So basically you have to turn off the browser's ability to process client side code, which will make a lot of sites break and a lot more sites really clunky to use. I personally have no patience for "the unwilling." Here is why, and you will also see why you are putting my health at risk.

So you are using an old version of IE7 which this hack works. You, unknowingly stumble across a hacked page.

"which could allow attackers to crash an affected browser or execute arbitrary code"

Arbitrary code. In laymen's terms this literally means "install any program they want" (however not that simple, if you are going to try and fight me). Through this a bit of remote code will be dropped in your RAM, which then might do something like download a virus.

But how does this affect Bob? Ok so this virus you just downloaded without knowing is now going through your email address book, which has my name, my email, my address, and maybe my phone number in it, because of course we are good friends. This virus just sent back all that information back to hackers and scammers. That is what "theft of personal information" means. So not only your personal info is compromised, but now mine is too. Thanks a whole hell of a lot for not updating your software, I enjoy reading unsolicited spam emails.

I try to update things as soon as one is available for IE and Firefox. I have to have a newer version of whatever program software I have...including anit-virus, anti-spy, anit-malware, etc. Sure all mine are free, but they work. However, if there is better free stuff out there I'd like to know lol! Basically, I like to have the best of FREE. lol!

BTW, sorry if you are going through that crap right now. It can be frusterating as hell!

not me love i keep my stuff up to date as well. i even have the norton antivirus on mac, though it has yet to ever find a virus.

Hell, I have Avast! Antivirus, CCleaner, Eusing Free Registry Cleaner, Advanced SystemCare, Smart Defrag, and Malwarebyte's Anti-Malware (Although I should find something that doesn't involve the IObit.com http://news.cnet.com/8301-27080_3-10389650-245.html?tag=mncol ), and then for Firefox, I have that WOT plugin http://www.mywot.com/ .

So yeah, I try to be as prepared as I can be with as far as free will get me. lol!

You forgot to mention that you stab your eyes out as you have to deal with people still using IE7 and they are complaining about bugs in your webpages, etc, etc.

I updated mine to IE8 ages ago, but when I report a bug, the report form that comes up says I am using IE6...well the last one did anyway....(last night)..so I changed it.

I gave you five stars for this valuable information bobski...see, I do value your intelligence much more than you could possibly think. I dont make a habit of ass-kissing either...and my problem is still to this very moment unresolved...but I give you kudos when kudos is due.

This is very interesting bobski, and thanks for this information. I update my IE whenever they come up with a new version.

My question to you, if you can answer it, is this: Does MS intentionally make these browsers vulnerable to these attacks and viruses? every day, almost, they send fixes for XP, IE, Word ..etc. what is going on bobski? are they morons or they do that intentionally for a reason?

It is annoying and you can't keep up with these "critical updates" from them.

No, TA, it's just that its a cat-n-mouse game between developers and hackers.  As soon as a fix is found, a hacker finds a way around it. As soon as a patch is created, a way to exploit it is discovered.

There's a real time, 24/7 war going on in the ether of cyberspace, and most causual users of the internet are never aware of it....until it affects *their* machine.

little-whip tells a true story.

Thanks LW and bobski,

I am aware of that war .. but I think that the problem could be fixed if they make the system not remote-accessible ... but they do it so they can access it themselves .... and that is the problem ...I think... but i am not a professional programmer ... i do it a little but may be they can't do it any better. but how come Mac's system are not that vulnerable???

mac systems are 1) UNIX compliant, 2) BSD Based (security-oriented server operating system) 3) not enough of the market yet for hackers to spend as much time hacking as they do on windows.

Thanks so much for that !!!!

That is what i meant ...  SOOPS (security-oriented operating system)  .... I wish MS was like that ...

Hey Bobski ... do it yourself ... you can do it ... and wipe Bill Gates off the map{#basic-laugh.gif}

Dear bobski, h ow do I update to IE8? I am not computer literate but am willing to learn. Just need some direction. Sorry I am causing you problems:( Not my intent. Would like to help Blogster all I can. You guys work hard and I appreciate the service you provide. I am not kissing you butt either! I do appreciate B.

helping blogster should only be a tertiary concern, the first should be yourself and your personal information.

depending on your os it could be as simple as Start > Programs > Windows Update

Thank you for the info {#basic-laugh.gif} Your very kind to an old woman.

I did it! My puter is set to auto update every day at 3:30A.M. But it said all my updates were installed and I am good to go:) Thanks for the help. You rock!
