Actually, the way I read it, Sarah Palin inquired what would happen if someone requested a book be removed from the library.  The librarian vowed to fight it the whole way or over her (the librarian's) dead body.

Now, many of you know that I'm a librarian.  No librarian in their right mind would not have in place a policy about requested removal of books.  If you don't have the policy in place, with the procedures spelled out you can open yourself up to a lot of problems.  First of all, most procedures start with a form that you give the complainant - who has to fill out everything, including why they feel the book should be removed from the shelf.  Then, it goes to a committee that is appointed by a library committee or board (depending on what type of library you are in) who investigate the request.  The committee can give a recommendation - and the final decision can be from the committee or board.  The reconsideration of a book often ends when the person has to fill out the form and has to justify their stance - sometimes they realize they may open a bigger can of worms because once one person successfully gets a book removed it can lead to an avalanche of other people doing the same.  Today "The Joy of Sex", tomorrow "The Bible."

I'm an academic librarian - I once had two books up for "reconsideration".  One was kept, the other was withdrawn and for reasons other than why the complaint had been registered - it actually contained dangerous medical advice that had never been condoned by a legitimate medical group - it also wasn't scholary or academic enough and we figure it got into the library via donation that wasn't checked very thoroughly before it was added to the collection.  The collection was stronger for having gotten rid of it.

With mayors (or city managers if you have that type of city government), the library buck often stops with them because the library is only one part of city services.  In the story I read it really seemed to me more like Sarah Palin was inquiring as to whether or not there was a policy and procedure as opposed to she had a list of books to withdraw - she may have learned about a town that didn't have one and ended up regretting it and she wanted to make sure they had one in place.  The librarian should have had such a policy in place and should have explained it to the mayor - and if she didn't have one in place she should have worked hard to get one approved - and thank the mayor for thinking of it.

I think it's interesting that the story quoted by therealthinker says that the censorship issue was not mentioned as a reason for her losing her job.  The implication is that other things WERE mentioned.  Since that is a private employment matter we'll never know what those were - but it's also possible the librarian in question used the censorship "issue" as a smokescreen.  Believe it or not libs, sometimes the problem may not be the big bad Republican.

LOL... It is interesting that the same ones who have screamed bloody murder because the Justice Department was peeking at suspected terrorists emails, now seem to think it is no big deal since it is in the form of a crime against a Citizen who is a high profile Republican.

As for the penalty for hacking, I think it could be pretty severe.  Penalties for tampering with the regular mail are very severe, and I think a case could be made that email should be regulated the same way.

I too have wondered if Hillary would really go for it if offered, especially at this date.  Frankly, I'd tell him thanks but no thanks - nothing like coming in second for something else.  If he gets beat, and if Michelle isn't lying (big if), this was Obama's one and only year to run for President.  If that's the case, and even if it isn't, Obama losing puts Hillary in a better spot to run for the Presidency in 2012 and get nominated.  By 2016 she'll be looking at 70 and she'll have the same age perception problem McCain has had so it could be tough for her if she isn't already in office.

That would definitely be a "kick"!! 

Marine, I don't know what the penalties are, but I doubt this kid decided to do this entirely on his own.  Someone knew he had the talent and decided to use it.  They better do some serious investigating.  

The Clintons are only being used anyways so they should tell the Dems to "stuff it."  If Obama wins Hillary will not have a chance to run in 2012; the Dems would never give her their support.

As far as Obama subliminally inspiring - I'd say he's well past subliminal since he's now telling folks to get in people's faces to convince them to vote for him.  Nothing subtle about that.  Besides, I doubt there are millions of college punks out there listening to him anyway.  On my campus they tend to be more McCain/Palin supporters.

This story was breaking. Not many news sources were covering it. Details were limited, at best.
