A Moderate Point of View: Republicans Miss an Opportunity to focus on Hunter Biden during the Impeachment Inquiry! Was it Dumb luck?

George Kent, the State Department expert on Ukraine who testified today, tossed the Republicans a softball early during todays testimony and they missed it completely.  Instead of chewing on a tidbit that Kent tossed out when he said that he had a problem with Hunter Biden, the Republicans muddled on about a bunch of non-sense missing a clear opportunity to focus on one of their key points.

Here is what happened today:

George Kent, the State Department’s foremost expert on Ukraine, seemed destined for a supporting role in Wednesday’s impeachment hearings — more memorable for his matching blue-and-yellow bow tie and pocket square than any newsworthy moments...

Kent’s rejection of the notion that Ukraine intervened in the U.S. election to oppose Trump appeared to frustrate the top lawyer for the Republicans, Stephen R. Castor, who eventually stopped asking Kent about it...

Kent also dispelled some lesser-known theories and talking points taken up by Trump’s defenders.

For instance, Democrats asked him to comment on the claim by Sen. Rand Paul (R-Ky.) that Trump’s threat to withhold aid to Ukraine was “exactly” the same tactic used by then-Vice President Biden when he threatened to withhold aid if Ukrainian prosecutor general Viktor Shokin wasn’t fired.

“I do not think they are the same thing,” Kent said. What Biden requested, Kent said, was the removal of “a corrupt prosecutor general . . . who had undermined a system of criminal investigation that we built with American money to build corruption cases.” Shokin, Kent said, had “destroyed the entire ecosystem that we were trying to create,” and he credited Biden for leading a U.S. effort to combat corruption in Ukraine.

Now to their credit, some of them attempted to redirect to the Hunter Biden issue....but the opportunity had been lost.  Here is how they attempted to redirect and the end result:

Kent did help Republicans establish that there was concern about the appearance of a conflict of interest when Biden’s son Hunter was given a seat on the board of the Ukrainian energy company Burisma while Biden led Ukraine policy for the Obama administration.

Kent said that he raised his concerns with Biden’s national security staff in a briefing call in February 2015 that the younger Biden’s position on the board “could create the perception of a conflict of interest.” Kent said he did not receive a response.

And Kent testified, “I did not witness any efforts by any U.S. official to shield Burisma from scrutiny. In fact, I and other U.S. officials consistently advocated reinstituting a scuttled investigation of [Mykola] Zlochevsky, Burisma’s founder, as well as holding the corrupt prosecutors who closed the case to account.”

That's where the Republicans should have kept their focus.  Kent would have been an ally to that discussion, because he had no problem voicing his concern about appearances!  Now the bitter with the sweet was going to be that he did not consider VP Biden to have done anything wrong, but who cares???  The hold purpose of continuing to mention Hunter Biden is to muddy the waters about that whole affair and 45 minutes of continual questions about Hunter today would have done the trick!

But alas the Republicans dropped the ball....and they may not get another shot at it!

If I remember right Schiff has stopped quesioning anyone about the Bidens. I was watching and the GOP rep stopped when it was said. Schiff mistakenly thinks he is the God of the House, this will come to nothing, and the swamp will smell stronger of their own corruption  as time passes.

He stopped the questions about Biden being called as a witness!

But Kent mentioned Biden in his opening statement, which meant that the subject was open game for people to ask Kent questions.  The Republicans instead of going on with some of the other non sense they were pushing should have adjusted and spent the rest of the day asking Kent question after question about Joe and Hunter Biden!{#basic-laugh.gif}

Jordon asked could Hunter speak Ukrainian? the answer was no, he then asked if Hunter had ANY experience in the energy area? the answer was no. sometimes a smart person waits to come in for the kill.I will wait and see instead of thinking they did not do their job

Agreed tess, but they will not get another witness on the stand like Kent who had first hand knowledge of the Hunter Biden situation and who objected to it!  Any future mention of the Bidens does nothing but to enhance the case against Trump!  Because everytime Trump mentions the Biden's it gives greater creditiablity to the 'Extortion" charges.{#basic-laugh.gif}

If there was a thing called perceived Quid pro, whatever the term is, then I could see it in the case of Hunter Biden. There is no way he would have end up on some board in the Ukraine if his dad was not the VP. And if Joe Biden was in anyway connected to any activity taking place in the Ukraine wheter is investigating corruption or not, the fact that his son is getting big jobs would have been a big give away. So I say it is implied or perceived quid pro.

exactly writer....which is why Kent was concerned about it!  Which is also why the Republicans should have spent all their time on that tidbit!!  Look the entire Hunter Biden thing is nothing but a distraction.....its entire purpose is so muir down Joe Biden in this stuff that he looses his traction as the most likely person to beat Trump.  That is all Trump wanted in the first place.  So why not go whole hog!

Joe Biden was never going to be found to have done anything wrong, because he didn't.....that should never have been the question.  The corruption was surrounding the person who hired Hunter and who Joe wanted properly investigated!  But that is too complex for the average voter to understand.  Trump wanted the seed planted and he got it....right or wrong.

Trump is going to be Impeached for doing what he did....but the Republicans can still gain from this by driving Joe Biden from the race.  They cannot save Trump (Rudy and the Boys have done him in) but they could have saved themselves and the Party for the next election....by continuing to cause the media to focus on Hunter Biden.

But here is what I believe is going to happen.  Biden will withdraw before the election....saying that it is for the good of the Party (he will not do what Hillary did)...and that he does not want to be a distraction.  His name will be cleared of any wrong doing and he will endorse and support Deval Patrick, as will Obama!{#basic-laugh.gif}

Meanwhile old Hillary Clinton is inching to throw herself back into the race. She is as hard-headed as a rock. I don't much about Deval Patrick, but I get a sneaky feeling Hillary Clinton is sneaking up in the rear.

Man that would be insane!!!!!!!!

Biden will in my opinion do what she should have done!  She was then and is still now badly damaged goods!!  She should have withdrawn and worked to clear her name....Biden could have been drafted to run at that time.  The woman is sick!!{#basic-frown.gif}

Biden reportedly has talked to Patrick.....who has probably been rather smart....this campaign has been too long.  It now becomes concentrated and anything these people did or said prior to now will be forgotten.  Patrick will get a PAC behind him and start to push towards the middle.  Look for some of those still in the race to move towards trying to be his VP.  If Biden survives and does not bow out....he will pick Patrick as his VP!{#basic-laugh.gif}

The only Democrat I find interesting at the moment is Tulsi.

Man I wish that she would just tone it back a little and try to find a real good mentor!!  I believe she has so much to offer and could be a real middle of the road candidate.....but she needs not to punch down to Hillary!{#basic-laugh.gif}

Hillary deserves a beat down. Tulsi wants to make sure she doesn't try to run again and disrupt everything.

Will Tulsi hit her real hard as far as I am concerned.  She also is close to making the December Debate Stage.  I think as the Debaters become fewer that she will get more exposure!{#basic-laugh.gif}

Meant "Well"....not will!{#basic-laugh.gif}

I hope she makes it.

I wasn't going to say anything on this post, because you know how much concern I have over the republican party and any "mistakes" it makes...but after reading the comments, I decided to write my own blog about what i read here.  The bigget problem I see is name recognition, because till I read this, I had never heard of Deval Patrick.
