The Funny Thing Is (Part 2)

Bangkok: March 2006

Our resident funny man, Mustapha Laff, compiles another collection of images of the unusual and the ridiculous from Ray and Nikki's travels and invites you to take part in The Daily Lama's first ever caption competition!

Much has happened to cause our travelling duo to chuckle since my last update in January - see The Funny Thing Is (Part 1).

Back in late January, Ray and Nikki thought they had made it big when they were invited to audition for a Thai TV commercial, for a new beer brand.

Ray and Nikki think they may have made it big!

The name of the beer is "Leo" and, as Ray and Nikki are both born under the sign of the Lion, they were potentially perfect candidates to use to promote the beer to the many tourists in Thailand.

Alas, all was not well with Ray and Nikki after the first taste and they had to withdraw from the audition because of a lack of personal belief in the product. "We simply did not like the taste and felt uncomfortable about promoting the product, despite the huge sums of money and fame it would have brought us. There are some things in life that are more important than that, although we cannot remember any!" said Ray.

The dream is over! Ray and Nikki's brief flirtation with the world of TV commercials comes to an abrupt end!

Despite their personal dissatisfaction with Leo, Ray and Nikki are told that they can keep the free bottle of beer - which gets met with mixed feelings!

Now, lets look at some humorous signs spotted by Ray and Nikki on their travels in Southern Thailand:

This sign (above) was spotted in Ko Phangan. Do they mean Knock Down prices?  Or does this company really promise to tear your home down in 7 days or less for over 3,000 pounds? The Thai people seem to have great problems adapting the English language sometimes!

Above: Spotted in Nathon, on Ko Samui, the sign informs customers about what is going to happen if they choose to enter and make a purchase!

This pair of signs (above) were one of Ray's favourites - definitely one of the more exciting areas to stay whilst in Penang, according to the signs at least!

There is nothing better than a good restaurant at the end of a long day, although I am not sure what the owners of this one in Penang (above) have in mind for their customers after they have eaten. Prices for all meals include a paper bag!

Those of you that are regular readers of The Daily Lama may remember Ray's brief stay in hospital in Ko Tao with an arm infection. In the photograph below, Ray is being shown some of the latest dance moves to be seen in the clubs around the island, by one of the doctors.

Above: You put your left arm in.....

Ray and Nikki also spent a day in Ko Tao snorkelling and swimming in all of the bays around the island, hoping to get a sighting of a friendly black tip shark...

Above: Hey, sharks! Come out, come out wherever you are!

Back in January, Ray and Nikki attended a Carnival Party for their friend Lozza's birthday in Ko Samui (A Carnival Atmosphere in Ko Samui). One of their friends, the delightful Christina is seen below with DJ Steve in the background, demonstrating the latest craze to be sweeping the clubs on the island, called Synchronised Mobile Phone dancing.

Thats right luv! Hold the tinsel in your left hand and swing those hips!

Whilst preparing in Surat Thani for their silent retreat (Silence is Golden) , Ray and Nikki continued the hunt for the giant policeman they had heard was working in the area...

Hey Nikki, do you think we are getting any closer to finding this guy?

This photo (below) was taken during Ray's first week in Thailand, as he had heard about a healer in Ko Samui who is able to help travellers clear their mind of all their mental baggage by removing the tops of their heads and washing their brains with a specially formulated tonic.

Dear Lord - I think I might have washed Ray's brain down the plughole.  Please help me find it and bring him back to normal!

THE DAILY LAMA CAPTION COMPETITION!

For the first time, I would like to invite our readers to enter my caption competition.  I have raided Ray and Nikki's photo album from their travels and found a few pictures for you to come up with your own humorous, creative or ridiculous captions.  To help you get your creative juices flowing, here are a couple of example captions:

Example 1 (above): "The brochure said it was supposed to be a luxury boat tour!"

Example 2 (above): "Nikki loved sunbathing so much - she didn't notice the sandstorm coming in!"

Now it's your turn - please have a look at the four photographs below and send me your captions in an email (at Ray and Nikki's email address), clearly marking which photo the caption belongs to.  You can do one caption or all of them, and even come up with new captions for our examples too - it's really up to you!

All entries must be submitted by 31st March 2006 and the best entries selected by the judging panel at The Daily Lama will be published in a special Winner's Edition during the next few weeks.  Good luck!

I look forward to receiving your emails and reading your captions!  Mustapha Laff

Editors Note: Great pictures Mustapha.  Amber and me are splitting our sides in the office!  We cannot wait to read some of the readers captions too.  By the way, here is another picture that Ray sent me recently (below).  Apparently, he dressed as a buddhist monk and joined the group below for some authentic Thai Buddhist meditation.  If there is anyone out there who can 'spot' Ray in this picture, a special prize will be awarded.  PS: No cheating - I have already warned Ray and Nikki that some of you may call them to try and find out exactly where he is sitting!

Where is Ray?  Eagle eyed viewers may be able to spot him... MOZZIE BYTE
