Can We Laugh At Political Tensions?
Uneasy. Nervous. Uncomfortable. Angry. Scared. Disappointed. Do you ever feel these feelings during political tension? Political tension can cause peoples emotions to go in many different directions. They do not know how to react to what is going on. Some may feel powerless; others may feel like they need to do something to change what is going on in the world. People may be uncomfortable because they do not know if their loved ones or friends feel the same way about the situation. They want to discuss the topic, but not many people like heated political debates. Instead of a debate, others use comedy to express themselves about what is going on.
Comedy is a way to make light of serious situations. When tensions are high, comedy and laughing is a good way to ease the tension. Most everybody can let lose a little and laugh about the situations going on in the world if they are presented in a funny way. Comedy helps ease peoples minds. Lets them regroup and reevaluate what is going on. After a comedy act they can take a deep breath and relax and think about what to do next. People may feel divided during political tensions with all the different views of people, but coming together and laughing at a comedy act can be very therapeutic.
Comedy is a way to bring people together during these tensions. Even if people have different political views, the different sides can come together and laugh about what is going on. Comedians have a special way of poking fun of situations in a way that makes it less serious than it may be. Sometimes the jokes may cross the line and be completely ridiculous, but crossing that line is funny and eases up the situation.
Overall, I think comic absurdity during times of political tension is a good thing for society. People need to laugh sometimes to ease tensions.

You're absolutely right alexar17. Since laughter is as natural as breathing, we should recognize it plays and important role in maintaining sound mental health and well being. From the early days of broadcast media, notable greats like Will Rogers, Bob Hope, and scores of others have used humor to relieve tension, while driving home important tenets of principles they believe in. There is a fine line however, between humor among friends and vindictive satire intended to humiliate rather than entertain. I guess like everything else, we have to moderate ourselves and apply common sense. Great article! Thanks for sharing your thoughts! :) |

Surely, "levity" and "comic absurdity" can be mutually compatible. Don't Jon Stewart and Stephen Colbert prove this?
