The Donkey

I have been spending time reading (at) G. K. Chesterton lately. Some what he writes goes over my head and a lot of the rest requires deep thought. He was an absolute genious and his writing covered vast territories of history, literature, Christianity and poetry. I am currently reading his biography.

The Donkey is just a tibdit of his poetry. It doesn't begin to rank in with the best. But it is quite amazing. The turn of one phrase at the end drawing it to a calculated and punctuated close.

The Donkey

When fishes flew and forests walked
   And figs grew upon thorn,
Some moment when the moon was blood
   Then surely I was born.

With monstrous head and sickening cry
   And ears like errant wings,
The devil’s walking parody
   On all four-footed things.

The tattered outlaw of the earth,
   Of ancient crooked will;
Starve, scourge, deride me: I am dumb,
   I keep my secret still.

Fools! For I also had my hour;
   One far fierce hour and sweet:
There was a shout about my ears,
   And palms before my feet.

I have most recently been reading from the collection "In Defense of Sanity" which includes essays from his entire career. I get the same thing as you do, some parts I understand, and others just go right over me.

Can I ask which biography you are reading?

Knight of the Holy Ghost by Dale Ahlquist

We become the donkey when we are surrounded by toxic, negative people who continually degrade us until we believe their words to be our truth.

Congratulations. Wisdom is often the outcome of plenty of selective reading.

Ken HI, may I ask please how come a post doesn't post "well I'm guessing it does" to friends ? when you do half the day before and save it, then finish it today?????   Not earth shattering I know, BUT...{#basic-tongue-out.gif} {#basic-wink.gif}

The 'save' feature or I believe it is called Preiview doesn't work here.

Thank you Ken.

I just attended the celebration liturgy of the dormation of the Holy Theotokos and ever Virgin Mary, today, also my name day, and this brought tears to my eyes... perfect timing.  Thank you.
