*The Stepfather (2009)- 2.5/5

The Stepfather is a remake of the 1987 film and while I haven't seen the 'old' film, the newer version did a decent job. The Stepfather starts off with David (Dylan Walsh) making coffee and toast in a house only for us the viewer to find out that young children and a parent are dead. So, right from the get go, you know that David is a serial killer. David walks out of the house and is now on a mission to find another family to murder.

David finds the 'Harding' family in a grocery store and within a short period of time, Susan Harding (Sela Ward) marries David. The family that David chose is a nice family and you get the sense that he may stick with them without anyone being killed. Problem is, a neighbor comes knocking on the door to tell Susan that she saw David being advertised on TV as a serial killer. The teenage son, Michael (Penn Badgley), overhears the neighbor and is now convinced that David is a serial killer, but nobody else suspects it. It's now up to Michael to prove to everyone that David is in fact a serial killer.

The Stepfather has some decent acting and a good story, but it might be a little too slow for the average viewer. I enjoyed it, but it does have some dialog problems, and for being a professional serial killer, Derek has some amateur problems towards the end that didn't work for me. It's not the best 'thriller' out there, but it worked for me. I like that the film showed you right off the bat that Derek is a serial killer. I could watch this movie every now and then,  but it doesn't deserve anything more than a recommended 'rent.'
