* New debt: $ 1,650,000,000,000
* National debt: $14,271,000,000,000
* Recent budget cuts: $ 38,500,000,000
Let's now remove 8 zeros and pretend it's just a household budget:
* Annual family income: $21,700
* Money the family spent: $38,200
* New debt on the credit card: $16,500
* Outstanding balance on the credit card: $142,710
* Total budget cuts so far: $38.50
-- Got It ?????
OK now Lesson # 2: Here's another way to look at the Debt Ceiling:
Let's say, you come home from work and find there has been a sewer backup in your neighborhood and your home has sewage all the way up to your ceilings.
What do you think you should do...
Raise the ceilings, or pump out the crap?

I've seen this before, but lots of people have NOT. Thanks for posting it. It really does bring things into a perspective that the average person can understand. Most people look at those big numbers, and they have no real concept of what they mean. Zillions and zillions of whatevers...and it makes no sense to them. This does. |

I think the govt should be prevenbted from using billion or trillion, etc. Instead they should have to spell it out. ie: Billion = One Thousand Times a Million Dollars (1000 X $1,000,000.oo) Trillion = One Million times a Million Dollars (1,000,000 X $1,000,000.oo |

In a recent SNAFU the govt/IRS mistakenly sent over 6 Thousand Millions of Dollars to ID Theives ! |

I agree...altho I don't know how much the average person would understand that either, unless they're heavily into politics...and numbers. I really like this simple explanation in everyday terms that most people CAN understand and relate to. I'm not a number person myself. It just looks like zillions and zilions of dollars, which is outside my realm of comprehension. Putting it in terms of the average household budget makes it understandable to me. Lots of people out there that are less comprehending than I am could benefit from seeing it presented this way. |

Yes...I saw a post about that mess on my facebook today, which I shared. I still think the average person has no comprehension about how much money that actually is. It's just 'blah blah blah...a number followed by a whole bunch of zeros....which means absolutey nothing to me.' |

The actual numbers are so huge most people glaze over when they're discussed--your crisp, clear rendering should be used much more often by politicians. Doing so would result in a dramaticly enhanced attention grabber--Numbers normal people can relate to.
