Yes there used to be ebb's and flows....but the standard was a set of Basic Values, Norms and belief in certain Social Institutions. Some of those norms and Basic Values are gone and as a result faith in Social Institutions has deminished! |

But good deeds can restore the faith in those values and institutions. It will take a long time but its surely doable. |

I think that the key is peeps knowing and plying/applying 'love ' to every thought and deed. I think that problem preventing that is that peeps will not humbly agree (or come to consensus on a truly handy/useful/usable definition for the word and the idea/concept of "love", and USE IT ! ! ! --end rant-- |

Love is so special where can muster it up. Its one of the reasons that I like Christmas so much. There always seems to be a little more love around. Maybe we do need to define what it is. For me its about having respect for people. Don't be daft! That was not any kind of rant, HaHa. |

Rant? Ach! You're too smart for me... Love is maybe 10, 100, 1000 or 10,000 things, but none those is an actual definition. Bible for instance is not defining when it says "Love is patient, love is kind...", etc. in Corinthians 13. No definition. Here is an example of an incomplete definition: "Love is the unconditional and active caring for and about the well-being and happiness of a person. |

That's a great example and I agree with it. I think you are right, there are many definitions, and there are different kinds of love, though I think that they all involve genuine caring in some way. |

A "model" citizen....with two definitions...as a "good" and as a "just like everybody else" citizen. |

I think its all about conformity to the standards set by government and media. Which is why its probably not always a good thing to be. |

Nor is it good to fit with what people around you think, necessarily. So, this has several layers and intrepretations.

A model citizen (of Amerika, at least) is one that doesn't just whine about their rights, but also understands and embraces the OBLIGATIONS that come with those rights. |

I think that's a "good" citizen. A model citizen seems more like a pre-designated mentality conformist. I mean, imagine what a model citizen is in China or North Korea. A freaking monster, I'd wager. |

Not really the Chinese, I mean they do believe in conformity and most of them feel it's best because they know little else. The North Koreans are scary though, having been spoon-fed hatred for western nations, and America in particular, from birth forward. Things are changing for them, however, as western dvds and such are commonly smuggled into the country, awakening the younger generations to the knowledge of the world writ large. |

Yes, North Korea seems like a horrible social experiement. It must be like 1994 in there. Hopefully what the Kim dude is gone the next generation will gain some kind of foothold. |

I love religion, it's a fascinating topic, and I've read as many 'Holy' books (not just the Bible, lol) that I've been able to lay my hands on. Been a lifelong fascination of mine. In the end, and where I remain, is with the meta belief that belief itself is a tool for achieving effects, and that since nothing is true, everything is permitted. That makes me a Chaote, if a label must be placed on it. So! Religions? Love 'em. Religious people? Depends on the person, true believers do have something I want, they have peace of mind. They do exist and I've been blessed to know a few, but could count them on my fingers, that's how rare they are. But I cannot convince myself and no 'Holy Spirit' has ever reached down and set me afire with belief, so...(shrugs.) It's the hypocrites that frost my hiney. The ones who act all pious while delivering viciousness at every opportunity. The liars who bear false witness while invoking the name of Christ or Allah or whoever it is they worship. Those who maim and slaughter (Boko Haram, for example) in the name of their deity. Those who ostracize sinners, being sinners themselves. I've always lived on the fringes of society, with addicts and thieves, prostitutes and the poor--(who some well fed christians seem to feel have somehow earned their poverty, who deserve it as part of God's punishment)--the physically afflicted and mentally ill. Kinda like the people Jesus hung out with, right? Oh, but let me drop a single "CUNT" on Blogster, and they condemn me forever, lol. There are so-called christians here who have saved insults I hurled at other members 7 or 8 years ago, happily trotting them out whenever they feel like having a full-on hate fest. Most are gone, most all of Blogster is gone, but the tiny burning core of 'em are hanging on to the bitter end. These sorts of christians? I don't care if they live, die, or grow mushrooms in their cracks, they can just suck my dick.

I find relgion facinating too, it's really interesting and I've done a lot of reading on it. I do prefer paganism because it's got more nudity and the tatts are cooler. But I am tired of old men telling me my vagina is beholding to thier sky fairy - fuck off ya old perv. |

Everyone has an opinion (or a 10,000). I think the best citizens know what love is, and they properly/successfully ply/apply it in most of their real life-suituations ...it in spite of their and other's opinions/thoughts/values. BTW1, I think that real humility is an outworking of one's ability love . BTW2, I think that almost no one has a true/useful definition of the idea/virtue of love . Wanna BrainStorm it? |

No one brainstormed it as well as Leonard Cohen, He was a Jew who also embraced Buddhist philosophy. Here he says it in song, I will post the lyrics since I know you probably wouldn't listen to it, even though it's not hard rock or even anything close. The man was a vocalist, and one of the best poets ever, these lyrics are prophetic. I have bolded the line about LOVE, feeling it perfectly expressed. It's called 'The Future.' On the surface a lot of poetry and poet's 'songs' are meaningless to all but a few who care to unscramble the words of a troubled mind; I don't. Too, I don't hear well (never have) so most songs are beyond my ability to suss. Yes, this one line is true about love: "But love's the only engine Yes, me, too... "I've seen the future, baby: It is murder. "
