Here is the latest on the Turkey/Kurdish situation:

ISTANBUL — President Recep Tayyip Erdogan announced Wednesday that Turkey’s military has launched a long-expected offensive into northeastern Syria targeting U.S.-allied Syrian Kurdish fighters who have played a central role in battling the Islamic State militant group.

“The Turkish Armed Forces, together with the Syrian National Army, just launched #OperationPeaceSpring against PKK/YPG and Daesh terrorists in northern Syria,” Erdogan wrote Wednesday afternoon on Twitter, referring to the Syrian Kurdish force as well as the Islamic State.

“Our mission is to prevent the creation of a terror corridor across our southern border, and to bring peace to the area,” he said, referring to plans to create a Turkish-controlled “safe zone” in northeastern Syria. Turkish media outlets aired footage of warplanes leaving from an air base in southeastern Turkey. Witnesses reported explosions in and around Tal Abyad, a Syrian border town, as well as Ras al-Ayn, a town farther east along the frontier.

The offensive has presented the Trump administration with a dilemma as it has sought to balance Washington’s partnership with Turkey, a NATO ally, and U.S. links to the Syrian Kurdish forces that helped beat back the Islamic State.

The White House announced Sunday that it was withdrawing U.S. troops from the area that Turkey planned to invade, igniting a firestorm of criticism in Congress — including from Republican leaders, who accused President Trump of abandoning the Kurds. In sometimes conflicting statements since then, Trump has defended the removal of U.S. troops.

“The United States has spent EIGHT TRILLION DOLLARS fighting and policing in the Middle East,” Trump tweeted Wednesday morning, using an inflated figure that has been repeatedly debunked. “Thousands of our Great Soldiers have died or been badly wounded. Millions of people have died on the other side. GOING INTO THE MIDDLE EAST IS THE WORST DECISION EVER MADE.....”

“Should have never been there in the first place!” he added later, after Erdogan’s announcement that the offensive had begun.

Whether or not we should have been there is not the point!!!  We were there and are there now!!  We convinced almost 80 other countries to join us there....many of them having no interest there, but came because we asked them.  They also have lost people and spent money.  And then we pull out without even consulting them or discussing the situation with them?

This is going to be a decision that is going to have long term repercussions for US Foreign Policy for years to come.  Sometimes you have to play the hand you are given, and part of the job of running a Foreign Policy is understanding how best to take lemons and make lemonade.  I fear here all we have done is make a lemon mess!

If as you said that the other countries don't know why they are in the Middle East then it probably is a good idea to leave. What benefit is it to the U.S to be there?

There is only a Geo-Strategic Benefit!  We have Naval and Air Bases there for Strategic reasons.  If we no longer want to play a Strategic role in the world than yes we need to completely withdraw!

Personally I believe we should withdraw troops from Iraq and Afghanistan....but there is a way to do it.  And it should be done in coodination with with allies and the host countries.  They same applies for Europe if we no longer want to be there...just do it properly and not on a wim!

well I say fuck it...the repubs got trump, seems that is what they want... the turks are now bombing the kurds... fuckem, they trusted  the US... heh! heh funny ain't it! Now there are russian spy planes flying over US secret installations taking selfies... fuck it, the us got what they wanted... they wanted trump. Seems fine to me. Oh, did I mention I killed my neighbor today? Yup, and I'm going to walk. Yup, my lawyer is doing the same as trump and the gop, he is only allowing evidence that he wants... isn't America great! God bless trump, he changed the rules, and the fools are letting him!

i have to agree with jjohnson...Now the whole world knows we are not to be trusted under this administrtion.  if that means that Russia and China are the ones that the rest of the world starts turning and it hurts our position in the world, it is no more than we earned by this debacle of an administration.

Fortunately, or unfortunately, China is massively incompetant and Russia, if it does really tap into its potential, will probably become as benevolent as the USA was back in World War times.  Either way, downhill USA.

There has never been an American representative at any level who is more of a clusterfuck than Donald Trump.

Poor Sceney and co. Poor all of us!

Thanks Oakie, for your compassion and sympathy in my trevails which, as you say, will end up affecting all of us.

Trump should go meet Erdogan. He's a bigoted little Muslim. He hates the West and whites, and non-Muslims.

Turkey is race hate in extremis re the Kurds. Didn't the North America and Europe fight against race hate a while back when another guy with a crap moustache was getting all uppety?

Everything Trump does is cowardly. He is a bully who faces up to nothing. All mouth and no trousers! Turkey has murdered allied Russian personnel and is super keen to do what Sadam did against the Kurds. And the USA used what happened to the Kurds as justification to attack Iraq.

If that ginger bastard sits on his hands and lets the real heroes of the Middle East, the Kurds, be massacred by the cockroach Turkish leadership, then Europe should put a "fatwa" on Trump and Erdogan. Who are truly a pair of tits.
